Title: Poor Bay tree!!
Post by: Sandy on May 06, 2011, 08:50:55 pm
The winter did in our huge bay tree as well as our baby tree, hope that the big one, as it still has a few brances with green leaves, will spruce up like monty don say's but am leaving the baby tree and wondering, also our rosemary has gone, not sure if that will return but I certainly need to do some re stocking!!!

Monty don says it will, then just trim off the dead bits, ours was so big and it came with us on 3 moves only to die this winter, there are some green bits but I use Bay all the time so I bought a small one and that is now a stick!! too expensive to buy big ones...the dead leaves smell just as good so I saved them for our fire!!

Mine went through a bad patch a couple of years ago. Leaves were very yellow and dropping a lot. I persevered and now it looks as good as new so don't give up hope

My rosemary died too - I had planted it about 20 years ago!  Suppose it was the cold

Bay needs to have fleece round it in winter up here.  Mint dies back and is usually OK, rosemary and lavendar are susceptible to frosts and draughts so won't survive biting cold winds like we have had last two years without similar protection.

Mentioned on another thread - heard Gardeners Q.T the other week (same show as the rat/mint question) discuss Bay trees. Mine is about 30ft and looks dead as a doornail, they said to cut them right back and give it a year. I am so upset, I really loved my tree, used it a lot in cooking and also for decorations at Christmas time, I think half of my village must have had a supply of leaves at some time or other. Anyway will give it a year and see what happens.

A huge tree like that might well survive.  The one I had was about 5 feet and in a huge pot.  I left it when I sold my house - just too heavy to move - and the new folk (good friends of mine) forgot to put fleece round it so it died.  I do hope your tree survives RP :'(
