Hiya folks,
Lesmahagow show are holding a native cattle class this year, alongside their other classes more info can be found here http://www.lesmahagowfarmerssociety.co.uk/index.asp (http://www.lesmahagowfarmerssociety.co.uk/index.asp)
I'm putting out a shout for anyone who wants to enter (Rosemary & Dan ? ;)) with their coo's. It promises to be a great day and of course you'll be able to see all the pigs and meet all us nutters lovely sane people down here ;D ;D ;D
This is the first year they've staged a native class and having a good turnout would ensure it continued to feature on their schedule.
Please lend your support if you can.

Bit too far for us. And, to be honest, I worry about disease.

Something you're trying to tell us Rosemary?

;D ;D ;D Not personally, but there seem to be so many awful cattle diseases that are spread easily, that i'd have to put my girls in white overalls with face masks. And they wouldn't like that.
-
Scary - you'd think they'd be vaccinations for this sort of thing nowadays - but I can understand where you're coming from, especially if you have a rare bloodline - shame :(
-
Problem is that some of them take a long time to show, so folk don't know the cattle are infected. My girls are from Shetland which is TB and BVD free so I'd quite like to keep them that way, hence AI not a visiting bull ;D
-
Just googled BVD - awful infection, can see why you'd be concerned.

hope you dont mind me saying this rosemary but you are trying to organise a smallholders show but you wont be participating due to your high health status
-
I've booked the 28th off work so I can come and see the piggies on parade

Yup, it's a tough one :-) Might enter sheep, poultry or fleece; might even bring a pony but not my beloved cows ;D
-
but that is still an avenue for disease to enter your closed herd
-
Good point. Forget the sheep and the poultry and I'll burn the fleeces on the way home.
And hang on - I'm not trying to organise the show. It ain't a one woman band so don't even think it. If you think it's inappropriate that I should get involved in organising the show because I won't show, say so and I'll butt out.
-
No butting here please ;) Robert?
-
rosemary you have got the wrong end of the stick on this
if we all were to worry about disease there would be no movements of any animals and don't think i am complacent about diseases the opposite is true
you are forgetting on a previous post we have encountered BVD at first hand :'( :'( :'(
-
Ive marked the date in the diary :)

Once again most animals travelling between shows are kept in isolation units, in fact if they do a lot of shows it is mandatory. The real risk is from those who attend only the odd show and do not use an isolation unit. Hope this clarifies things

wer hoping to take maya, hoping the pig classes dont clash too much. we were practising this morning....not much panache tho, but gota start somewhere!!
-
princess are you bringing cattle as well :cow: :pig: :farmer:
-
wer hopin to bring 2 weaners and one heifer if i can juggle them all with the timings.
-
that is fantastic and good on you for making the effort :pig: :pig: :cow:
-
if think Daala is conformationally the better cow, but Maya is tamer (and my favourite) so we'l bring her as its our first time with pigs and cows. i hope its not a too posher show incase we embarrass ourselves!! i presume cows only have to walk and not trot up like ponies...we watched the cattle classes at turriff last year but i cant remember. shes a shetland. i presume she'l be upgainst dexters (are they native?) and highlands. quite a variety.

contact izzy the show secretary she will keep you right with the cattle remember to fill out your forms(entry and movement) any problem just contact us

Sorry to harp back to the "show or high health status (protecting your herd)" but there is more than one thing to consider. Health status is tremendously important, and there are scary diseases out there. Well enough do I remember that awful night we had to evacuate out of Dumfries show because Foot and Mouth was confirmed- I don't know that I have ever been as scared.
But- Shetland cattle are a rare breed. So what better way of letting people see how beautiful and important these cattle are than by showing? If by seeing some Shetland cattle at a show, you convert just one other person into someone who keeps and breeds them, surely that is worth it.

wev been training anyway, up and down our road. shes being really good too, thats why i like shows, they give u a deadline to do certain things like handling. so easy to put it off if u dont need to. just hope she behaves under pressure :o her horns just stick out at right angles at the mo, :o :o
im thinking that taking any animal to a show, puts your stock at risk, unless disinfect your tyres, boots, hooves etc.
