Title: introducing a new nanny pygmy goat
Post by: shiv22 on April 28, 2011, 10:14:57 am
Hi,
I could use some advice, I have 2 pygmy goats one nanny 3 years and one weather male 2 years. I have just agreed to take a 18 month old nanny and i will be picking her up in the next few days, i was wondering is there a best way to intrduce her to my exsisting goats? Would a night time introduction be best or during the day?

thanks
siobhan

I would go for a morning when you have the time to keep an eye on things throughout the day and with any luck they will have settled by bedtime - that's not taking into keeping her separate in case of bugs but then she wouldn't like being on her own!

can you fence off an area where she can be and still see the others? just for a little while to make sure she's not brough in bugs but also to allow them chance to get used to each other? when our new nanny comes we have planned a strip of land alongside the current goat  paddock, she will be in the shed that the lambs currently use (thoroughly cleaned of course) and eventually able to move in with her new herd. that's the plan anyway  ;)

Thanks for the advice, little Phoebe has now settled in with Melvin and Hariette nicely. Theres been a little bit of butting and pushing around but things have calmed down now and everyone is getting along happily.
