Title: Royal Highland Show 23rd to 26th June 2011
Post by: Rosemary on April 26, 2011, 02:21:49 pm
Anyone going from here?

Let's make a concerted effort to meet up this year, even if we all have to wear funny hats or Tshirts.

Someone might have spare stockman's ticket for one day.  Depends on how many animals you take.  We have different family members coming to help each day so they all get a turn - there's not much to do so plenty of time to see the show.  You get a one day ticket if you enter a fleece in the comp too......

Will be there all week. Only reason I missed the meet up last year was because it was scheduled for during our judging! Will have more free time earlier in the week this year as our judging is being pushed back to Saturday, with our milking comp on Friday. Therefore will be free on Thursday, and part of Friday.

Oooh, is it that simple Rosemary?

I have a lovely pair of wellies that might be fun to show off  (the sort that lay brown eggs rather than the sort that leak and smell).

It's too late to enter most livestock, but fleece and maybe eggs closing date is sometime in May.

I will be there in the Hebridean sheep bit, every day - they get longer and longer til by Sunday I will be crabbit and tired  ;D.  Our judging is on Fri morning so any other time.....

Probably be there at least one day, not sure which yet. Should we wear something so we can recognise one another. I am too shy to approach people!

Can I enter a duck and not take him or her?  Do you have to go and let them know or just do a no-show?

No you can't enter a duck and do a no-show. It looks like the show has cottoned onto that. You only get your tickets once you have delivered your bird to the poultry tent, normally on Friday evening or Saturday morning.

http://www.royalhighlandshow.org/assets/downloads/POULTRY_Schedule_2011.pdf (http://www.royalhighlandshow.org/assets/downloads/POULTRY_Schedule_2011.pdf)

"Entry to the showground with birds will be by letter of authority.
Re-admission wristbands, to enable exhibitors access to the show, will be issued by the stewards
when the birds are delivered into their pens - only one wristband will be issued for each exhibitor
number and only if that exhibitor makes five or more entries. Wristband access is only permitted
via the main show entrance gates."

The entries are still open for poultry. Remember, if you enter the poultry, you will only get tickets to admit you on the Saturday/Sunday as those are the days the poultry are exhibited.

In that case I won't bother then.  My memory isn't great but I seem to remember £15 being asked for  either that or the Game Fair.

Not heading to the RHS this year, have chosen to try the Smallholder show down in Wales instead, never been before. We will combine it with a few days holiday too.
Anyone know why the RHS is called "Highland" when it is in Edinburgh?

there are 8 regions that organise the RHS in the good old days when the show travelled the country they had a different area every year
then they decided it was cheaper and easier to have a permanent location  and hence ingilston was adopted as home to the RHS

I've seen old photos of when the RHS was held in Alloa in 1929. By the power of google, I found a silent film of the champion cattle and horses. Now to find out how to watch it  ;D

southernskye, we're going to the Smallholder show in Wales too. So is Andrew, on here. It's a great show - you'll love it. We went in 2009 for one day - going both days this time as we didn't see it all in one day.

Morning Lillian, Rosemary,
Thank you for the information on the RHS and the way it used to be. I now understand the name. Shame it wasn't changed though to be more accurate, The Royal Scottish for example...still they have Highland games down south too ;).

Rosemary: It is good to hear the RWAS(?) is a fine day out. We've booked tickets for the Saturday and, if we have a good time/do not see everything, will go on the Sunday too. It's a long way to travel for us but I have been yearning to go for several years. I cannot wait !  ;D

I will look for the TAS cake stall  ;)

I think it would be brilliant to have a smallholders show in Scotland so do collect as many ideas as you can while you are down in Wales.  What are the dates for that?

21st and 22nd May

I did have some discussions a few years ago with the organisers of Gardening Scotland about extending it to smallholding, but it came to nought. I didn't have time to chase it up.

If you have an email address perhaps Scottish TASers could get in touch with them and ask them nicely if they would consider it.  Power of the people stuff may be required?

I'm afraid I'm guilty of entering poultry and doing the no show bit in the past ;D ;D...I will be there both Thursday and Friday and more than happy to meet up with anyone for a natter over a cuppa and hog roast roll ::)

21st and 22nd May

I did have some discussions a few years ago with the organisers of Gardening Scotland about extending it to smallholding, but it came to nought. I didn't have time to chase it up.
I'm hoping that maybe, perhaps, eventually, between the RBST, CSSA, SPKA and 'Friends of Palacerigg rare breeds' that we can get some kind of smallholder show organised ........ perhaps using Palacerigg Country Park as a location ?
They have the space, parking and facilities already in place and the new manager there seems quite keen to do new things  ;)
The other possibility is that Kirkintilloch show may consider making their show more of a smallholders event - I know from speaking to someone involved with it that they feel they struggle to attract farmers and it's mainly the equestrian side that have a big turnout and while this is a good thing they'd like it to be something a bit different to attract more visitors. I'm up there on the 14th of May (with some gorgeous Kune Kune piglets to cuddle ) so will make some tentitive enquiries .......... watch this space  ;D

Ingliston charge £3 a car!  I certainly would back Lawrie & Symingtons at Lanark - lots of both indoor and outdoor space!

Palacerigg are hoping to convert one of the paddocks beside the drive into temporary parking for big events, which should ease the problem.

Ingliston have been approached and are not really interested.  Also, it is an extremely expensive venue, so the only possibility there would be to combine with another event such as the Gardening thing.  Thinking about how much it costs to enter animals for the Highland Show, there wouldn't be many entries at that site for a smallholders event.

Kirkintilloch would be very interesting although it would remain smallscale I would think.  But it could set the trend for other local agricultural shows to go down that route.

For Lanark, there is a large field across the road from the mart where the Medieval Fair is held (the racecourse  ;D) , which could combine with the mart itself  to host a large smallholders event, with room for lots of stalls and so on.  Lanark does have the advantage of being accessible from England and from the southern half of Scotland, but the Central Belt might get overall greater numbers.

I'm going on the friday, I shall be bringing my dear mother with me.... ::)

But she's a good laugh and may possibly be helping me to purchase some more goats in the near future... :o

How about we get t-shirts that say 'The Accidental Smallholder'
Then we will definately know who's who!

Or it maight be cheaper just to have 'TAS'....

Lanark's only about an hour from most bits of the Central Belt

Yes, I went on a website to have a t shirt printed with goosepimple on it - the t shirt was cheap but the printing plus the vat plus the postage - it was going to cost me £18.00+ - easier to get an old t shirt and felt pen it on (sorry am I a cheapskate), or maybe for instant authenticity painting it on in chicken poo might add that certain aura the Highland Show deserves. :o

Ages ago, when I was going through a creative phase  :D I bought some special 'paper' that you could print off on your computer and then iron it onto a t-shirt, then peel off the back, hey presto!  Obviously you need to invert the text prior to printing so that it is legible without the use of a mirror! However I still have those tops somewhere and they went through the wash quite a few times and came out super.

Now lets see if they still make the stuff.......

All over Scotland, I like the sound of that, much more of an event.  Anyway, the t-shirt milarky - why don't we all just get dressed up as an animal and meet up - we'd hit the headlines anyway - say a gorilla or something ;D - much more creative than a t shirt!

Hi SS,
The Highland Agricultural Show Society was established in 1784.
In 1822 it was held at Queenberry House where 1000 members and public attended bringing gate taking to £52.00.
In 1872 prince of wales ages 17 attended.
1872 queen vic intimated her interest.
The word ROYAL was bestowed at Inverness show in 1948 by King George v1.
Since then there has always been a royal at the show.
