Please can someone clarify AI
I think I read that a AI,ed guilts litter cannot be registered pedigree....I'm just not sure, advice welcomed please
-
Bit unclear what you mean.
I'm assuming you're talking about a registered pedigree gilt which is put into pig via AI, which then has a litter.
If the semen has come from a registered pedigree boar (e.g. from Deerpark), then the litter can be registered as pedigree. No difference to having her directly served by a boar. When you come to register on the BPA website, it will ask you whether it is natural service or AI.
Hope this helps.

The most effective contraceptive is an Exocet Missile.
It kills all semen at 40 miles...........

Browntea, as you're looking to breed pedigree pigs, don't worry about the reference to pooled semen. Pooling semen is mixing semen from two or three boars - common in commercial breeding. However, if you are buying from Deerpark, the only place that caters for rare breeds, they don't do that. Good luck and drop me a message if you want a chat.

Liz is not correct in what she says.
Yes, Deerpark supplies rare breed semen. They also supply Hampshire semen, which is pooled (they are tied to a contract with the supplier of their boar). I enquired into this and spoke directly to Robert Overend and the BPA resulting in spending several days researching the BPA records and telephoning Hampshire breeders, eventually locating a Hampshire boar to bring to Scotland without any restrictions on selling off spring and without the boar and gilts being related.
This is why I posted about the pooled semen.

Congratulations on sharing the fruits of your research, Lillian. Hope all this help you, Browntea. Good luck with the AI - whatever breed you choose to inseminate!
