I've been sold some 'Summer fly cream' made by Battle (it's bright yellow) which says it's good a good insect repellant for sheep & horses; but doesn't say how much to apply, or how often.
Could anyone advise please?
I suppose I should also ask the question: does this stuff work? as no-one mentioned this stuff on Shearlings very similar thread.
I've sent an enquiry to their (Battles) website but I am still awaiting their reply.
Thanks

Used to use this about ten years ago for shearing cuts and for the heads of rams to keep bitting flies away, have to wear gloves when handling and i just put a dollop (small for cut big for head ) on once a week worked but ive moved on to altrenatives

about once per week - OK. I think when it's used up I'll try and get a longer lasting alternative next time. :)
Thanks Shep53

WeE were given some of this, or very similar. We did not neeed to reapply though. We found it useful for the shearing cuts - new shearer this year. Again use gloves. We still have a large tub. Shep53 what alternatives have you found that are better?

For cuts at shearing now use iodine drys up the cut tried over many years ( crovect - battles cream -udder cream -tar plaster -stockholm tar-tee tree oil-hydrated lime-maggot oil others ive forgtten ) some difficult to apply at speed (contract shearers ) some allow fly to bite then kills them, damage done

THis sounds much better So do you use it for everything rather than the yellow goo?

I use Summer Fly cream on horses tho I don't have sheep (yet!) to compare. It works well on nicks and on mares udders where they are at risk of fly induced mastitis. I have an ageing broodmare who has permanently swollen teats and always has yellow underneath all summer - it lasts a couple of weeks or more but I do agree with using gloves to apply as it stains forever :o

For sheep the correct item from Battles is "Blowfly repel" which is a spray on non-chemical product.
Thanks

SHEARLING i only use iodine at shearing for the cuts ,other problems get other solutions, The fly cream worked but got every where and yes depending on what part of the body and how much rain it may last longer or shorter, the yellow stain will last for months even in the west coast of scotland
