hi all
what sun lotion are you all using for pigs
its costing me a fortune
does any body know of a large cheap one on the market
thanks
-
Yes it's called a wallow :D
This really is the best solution, the pigs love it, and they get a really good mud sun block.
-
OAKLANDS you crack me up its called a wallow :D

We used Tesco Value once last year, but it stinks (literally). Usually we take just anything that's on offer, we use it for the pigs' ears as the mud gets everywhere except on top of their ears ::)
It's indeed costly, sun cream, a bulk product would help.

I've been slapping on the factor 50 today for the first time this year. Bought it cheap from Tesco at the end of last summer. Before that, I was trawling the cheapy stores - Poundstretcher, Home Bargains, Lidl, Aldi....
You'd think some company would have come up with a 5 litre tub of something by now. Maybe there's a gap in the market for someone to exploit! Where is Supplies for Smallholders... :)
-
I read somewhere.....can't remember where now!.....That you have to be careful with some sunscreens as the protection factor deminishes with time. So you may find the cheaper ones are cheaper because they are old stock and won't work as well.
I mix up some mud with water to the right consistency(just past the sticky stage, but not watery) to rub over their ears and tails....works a treat, you can see if it needs reapplying, and is free. :) :) :)

Thought I would not need to deal with this problem - Kune Kunes + woodland + wallow :D but we've now got a Ru boar, who is cream & I can see his tender pink skin underneath - anyone else got cream Kunes & do you use suncream on them? It's gonna be a messy job getting suncream through that hair ;D
-
You get stuff (think it's made by L'oreal) which is quite watery (almost like oil in fact :-\) and it sprays on - no need to rub in. I used it for the kids last year and it was good, a wee bit expensive mind you. But they're worth it ;) ;D ;D ;D
-
I got factor 50 with vitE and aloe vera in a spray for kids in the pound shop a few weeks ago. Smells nice too!
-
i can just imagine commercial pig farmer with 500 going around with the sun cream every day, :D
-
Our three boys were enjoying the sunshine this weekend by flopping down in the damp muddy soil, and getting the occasional light shower from the hosepipe. I guess it helped in that we had some heavy rain last week that has left the ground wet.
-
Guess it's time I got some sun-spray - Tommy's ok, but I've caught the sun on MY arms today ::)
-
we used to use zinc and castor oil on the ponies noses.
-
We use surfers Zinc ... easily lasts a couple of days ... I particularly like to make them look ridiculous but using the coloured ones! :P ;D

Heheheh, that sounds like fun. I'll have to see if I can find some.
-
Coloured sun cream - fab! Now we can recognise them by their ears only - usually the only thing still visible after a roll in the mud! ;D We could name them Pinky, Blueboy, Greengirl...
Somehow our pigs always end up with just the top of their ears, that most vulnerable bit, without mud - maybe one of those pigs from a 500-strong farm can explain to them how it's done! :D
-
Imagine the size of a wallow for 500 :D I don't know of anyone with a herd that size keeping them outside - maybe that's how they get over the sunburn issue ;)
-
OK another daft question coming up, maybe: is there anything I need to watch out for in the ingredients list that should be avoided for pigs?
-
Not a daft question - one I hadn't thought of asking tho - just assumed that human sun screen would be ok for pigs ::)

errr... in theory, humans should be less likely to eat anything that's put in front of their noses!
(We had a rescue dog once, she'd nearly starved and so that was the excuse we made for her manners. Her first rule of life was, "If I can swallow it, it might be edible. If it doesn't come back up, it was.")
-
Oh bless - thankfully she ended up with you
-
oooh thats so sweet.
-
Oh that poor dog, she's so right in her attitude!
We've never seen the sun cream causing rashes or anything, so just any should be fine. Good question, though!
We've also used baby oil on dry pig skin, again with no ill effects.

Thanks, I'll take a look in Tiso next time I'm in Inverness.
