does anyone grow it, is it easy to grow?
not one i have ever grown but have discovered i quite like eating it so thought i might try it at somepoint!!!

We bought a plantling of it last spring in B&Q, stuck it in the old flower bed & forgot about it :-[ It flourished & flowered & went to seed, not sure if it was supposed to be left in the garden over winter, but there's no sign of it at the mo ::)
-
I have grown it inside and outside in Shetland! It does go to seed quicker than other veg I have found so best to stagger planting .
-
It should grow back again each year too. I love having the bronze variety - so pretty, and a handful of it as you go by tastes lovely. Now I've been reminded how nice it is I must get some.

Caught you Annie - so you CAN grow herbs ;) ;D

:-[ :-[ :-[ If I remember to keep my brain in gear, water at the right time, feed at the right time, weed at the right time, harvest at the right time etc I can actually grow things. I'm rubbish at Farmville ::) ::) ;)

Hello, Do you mean bulb fennel ( the one you cut into salads etc)or standard? Bulb fennel, the Italian one is also called Finuccio. I haven't grown bulb fennel. I have a standard fennel plant outside my front door it's been there for years. I get about 6 foot tall. I hack it down when the seeds are dry. I will have a go at bulb fennel though. I don't know if it's too late this year. I'll have to go and read a seed packet in the shop.

I grow florence fennel ( bulb) the herb fennel is different, that I dont grow. Forgot there was two types.
-
I have a fennel outside the kitchen window - been there years and it's lovely but doesn't get used - assume it's the herb type but had no idea the bulb ones were different so just as well someone pointed it out as I was wondering about digging it up to eat the bulb :o
-
If it's the type with lovely thin fronds try grabbing a handful and eating it as you go by.
-
That's the best thing about growing-your-own - nibbling your way around the garden :yum:
-
it was the bulb variety i had in mind, will give them a try when i can!!!
-
No sign of it yet this year - still covered in spring flowers but I'll try a frond when/if it returns :)

A couple of weeks ago I planted a hand full of fennel seeds in the garden (which i usually use for making bread) - no idea if/when they'll grow but my son loves nibbling the fennel leaves from a plant down the road. I didn't realise there was two types either...might try and find some 'bulb' seeds as it's lovely chopped up in salads - anyone know when to plant it.
