Title: prolapse (not mine .....sleepy's)
Post by: manian on March 28, 2011, 07:29:06 pm
hi
we got some new hens and they settled in well....... sleepy was so named as she kept closing her eyes as though she was nodding off. kept her separate at first in case she was ill but she opened he eyes and always came running for food and no probs with poo and eating.
whilst i was away my hubby noticed she had liquid poo and imediately put her into ITU  ;) requiring 1 to 1 observation and intensive care. he spoke to the vet who unfortunately wasn't much help to him and said she will probably die :( . however she recovered quickly and poos returned to normal.

today he found her looking sad crouched in the corner.... i checked her out and she has prolapsed with a huge egg. got the vaseline and followed directions the egg wouldn't break... in the end we had to hand drill it and then managed to do the rest by hand.
i've put her back into ITU and she's happily eating and drinking.

what do i need to do now :dunce:
any advice

Just TLC I suspect.  If she lays again soon the same thing may happen and the outcome may not be so positive. It may just have been a particularly larger egg than her usual ones.

Hi Mandy,
Poor Sleepy!

Lots of TLC, and maybe a shot of antibiotic if you've got some, just to be on the safe side....
other than that, I'm not really sure :dunce:  ::D

expect the worst. at the first signof illness cull her. we had a lovely brahma that it happened to its a shame but the vet is probably right. unless your prepared to spend a few hundred then just hope it sorts itself.

Hi we have had 2 hens with this problem the first 1 died of internal bleeding this was after months and months of her being put on her own and us trying to bring her round....which she would come round but after a while  she would go back to being sleepy .In the end she could not stand up she was so weak .Ive been told theres nothing anyone could do .The second one i just killed her cos she would have died anyway....sorry to bring u the bad news :(

one of my rhode rocks prolapsed but we have been lucky in that it only happened once. brought her in while we popped the prolapse back in with some haemmoroid cream, sprayed her bum purple to stop others pecking. that was over 3 months ago, still laying every day. so its not always bad news but like I say, i think we were lucky perhaps.

One of ours had a prolapse and the other chickens pecked her to death while we were out  :-[

Keep an eye on her in case it happens again as the first sign of blood and they are in there! Was certainly a shock for us as we were new to chooks.

hi
shes now back in the others, pooing ok but no egg yet......keeping a close eye on her. The others (except the other warrens) seem to be looking after her and stop her being picked on
fingers crossed
