Title: Mobile Field Shelter Solutions??
Post by: Mays on March 28, 2011, 07:02:54 pm
So, I am now getting the ladies summer paddock ready where I hope they will enjoy plenty time out this summer, however Scottish summers being what they are I need a good mobile field shelter solution for them!

So what is everyone using? and does anyone have any photos/tips?

Can you get your hands on a container/old caravan or similar?

Hello, Depending on the size of your goats, Animal Arks do some good ones, I have heard good reports and would love one myself. Oh if only......!

Yes, I have animal arks goat shelters.  Ideal as they can be moved if needed.  Had to save up, and raid my egg sales fund, but well worth it.  Will have more when I can afford it!!

Wish I'd seen your thread first- have just started one asking for photos! Maybe it will benefit us both  :D

Could put up ads in your local feed suppliers/pet shops asking if anyone's got any old horse trailers.  Some of the old wooden ones weigh a ton & folks are buying the newer, lighter metal ones.  Also they rot - unsafe for moving horses, but safe enough for housing goats, with a little ingenious patching-up.  The top-half of the back can be blocked-off easily enough with a peice of ply to provide more shelter, but you can just park them with their backs away from the prevailing wind.

Easy to move around the field too  ;) - just block the wheels when you park them up  ;D

Mine is fully enclosed, with a door.  Did check before buying, re goats climbing on it. Supplier has own goats and pigs, so they use these sheds on their own animals

I use an old floor-less pig arc - suits them well and they jump on top of it all the time!

We also use old pig arcs without floors - to move them we turn them onto their tops and pull / rock them - our Boers wintered out in them this last winter and were fine

We use an old smallish stock trailer. We can move it around easily and the goats come and go through the small side door. A fence post driven in through the towbar end stops it blowing away.
