Title: Ummm might my pig fancy my OH?!
Post by: loosey on March 21, 2011, 12:22:59 pm
Tulip has all of a sudden decided that Rob is a bit too handsome to pass up  :o :o

She's always been a bit flighty but in the past week (since she's been in season) as soon as she hears his voice she goes mad!

She charges around the paddock screaming her head off and won't let the other two near him when he goes in with them.

Also ... does anyone know what the noise means when they open their mouth and grunt quickly and repeatedly. The do it when I scratch them but it's much different to their noises at feed time and not just soft grunting!

Hi thestephens! Welcome to TAS!

I'd like to think it was friendly, although it sounds quite aggressive (they're not usually!). It's just so loud ... they normally do it just before they try and itch on my leg!!

I always think that's their excited to see you noise. A loud welcome almost. My boar quite likes me too I have to feed him now when I go in with him else Boris would try bonking me I think !

My wee KK sow does that open mouthed, raspy grunt too (not the same as her happy contented grunt which comes with belly rubs  ;)) I always think it's when they're a wee bit stressed/excited/nervous.

I dont go in with the boar unless OH is around or I have the pig board because he (cant understand why) finds me sexy.  God I was never that good looking, but surely even at my advanced age being lusted after by a large, hairy, smelly mud covered pig is the pits.

HM you are quite correct with the caution

My boar is soft as putty (unless - well I suppose when I'm in season! - or star week as slimming group always used to call it :-/) - he always acts a bit wierd if I go in there with him then. Not aggressive but I do feel a bit uncomfortable and cornered sometimes!
Anyone else find this with their boar?

Yes pigs can get attached to one or other owner.

Boars also can change behaviour as their female owners cycle, and customers of ours tell us that the ladies have more issues with boars being overly attentive than the blokes do.

The sounds pigs make are complex, and without both hearing and seeing it is sometimes difficult to work out noise.  For instance the greeting from trixie our tamworth is very vocal, and I would take as a warning from say a saddleback.

It is a question of reading both the sound and body posture/actions that make the whole picture.

We find two things with boars - first keep female (pig) company with them - females can stay with them after mating until just before farrowing. Second, the more you handle the better they are - regular interaction when they are young is the key to getting a dopey boar.

Hm's advice on taking a pig board in with you really does help confidence.  I visited an experienced customer today who has just taken on a mature mangalitza boar who has had little handling, and without a board I would be hobbling or worse now.  With a board I was able to show how to start to tame him, with little risk to the owners, and hopefully he will become socialised over the coming months.

On the other hand one of our sows is totally in lust with OH which is very handy when she gets bolshie with me, as she will do anything for him.   ;D  The boar too is a saint with OH just me he finds sexy.  (He is the only one in the world who does!!!!  :D)

I have found since becoming pregnant my boars will have nothing to do with me at all! They are not aggressive and always used to come up for scratches but now will only do this with my oh!

Being a lady of a certain age seasons aren't a problem for me any longer but i find perfume to be a boar turn on!
Most days at home i don't bother with it but if we're going out, or to work i have a quick spray and as i pass the pig pens Roofy is sniffing the air and drooling! He has a definite preference for Chanel No5! ;D and if i go in after being out of an evening to put him to bed he positively tramples me in the hurry to get a mammy cuddle and have a good sniff of me. Its just as well that most of time i smell of pig p**s and poo or i'd have serious problems as i now have 3 boars (long story)

Now that is interesting as I always wear perfume, (and I usually smell of pig poo too).  Please, please, please tell us the long story of the 3 boars

He's not as soft with them as I am Faith so sometimes gets a little bit worried about her throwing herself at his feet!! ::)

It's interesting about the noises. It does sound like an aggressive noice but they've never shown signs of being so ... they particularly make it at feed time as they gallop across the paddock, ears flapping and tails wagging!

Roofy is so handsome she'd succumb immediately ;).
My three boars story Gerry is nearly 7, has fired blanks for the last 3yrs but lives with Deely monster of a similar age, they were my first herd and i was too soft to send them both on their way!
Roofy will be 4 in November and is prolific producer, handsome (he has the most gorgeous eye lashes), gentle and a real mammy's boy however he is now starting to come upon his daughter's literally!!!
so i've bought Baby Gee who's 9mths old to go with Trixie, Twinkle & Clover. So i now have 3 boars which i have to keep away from each other or they'll fight to the death.
Gerry has a go at me if i smell of the other two, Roofy's not bothered too much, and Baby Gee trys to push me round if i smell of the other two.
OH says one has to go!  ::)
We shall see...........................
