Hi Folks, here we go with the photo competition: Schedule designed by Karen is attached showing all the information you need. Print this off and keep it handy.
Dan has setup a JustGiving page for TAS and the photo comp, it's at:
http://www.justgiving.com/TheAccidentalSmallholder (http://www.justgiving.com/TheAccidentalSmallholder) - the Just giving link for Japan is Shelterbox
Send a donation for Japan by setting up an account with Just Giving, using either a debit/credit card or a paypal account.
For New Zealand click on the link to the Christchurch appeal on the Just giving page on the right, under the gallery link. (NZ$ are approximately 50p, so if you donate NZ$10, that is about £5) Credit/debit card can be used or an electronic transfer from your bank to theirs using the account details given on the Christchurch page.
You can post on Facebook and Twitter that you have donated in order to publicise the donation websites.
Let's say £1 per photo as a guide. Photos will be judged on interest, composition, technique, and content, by Calum Morrell, who is a photographer, Rosemary Champion, who you all know for her vast knowledge on most species of flora and fauna, and one other who is also a smallholder with vast experience but who hasn't confirmed yet. The gallery is almost ready to go, it's at:
http://www.accidentalsmallholder.net/forum/gallery/ (http://www.accidentalsmallholder.net/forum/gallery/)
The maximum photo size is 1280x1280 pixels, and 2 megabyte file size.
To add a photo:
1. Click on the Gallery Name you want to add to.
2. Click the 'Add a picture' link at the bottom of the gallery.
3. Fill in the form with at least a title and the photo file.
That's it.
Now read the schedule, then go and look for lots of good photos and get your entries in.
Good luck, everyone and let the best photo be displayed on the CSSA calendar 2011!
(ps I think everything is self explanatory, but feel free to PM me if you have any queries)
-
All systems go, folks, the Gallery is waiting - http://www.accidentalsmallholder.net/forum/gallery/ (http://www.accidentalsmallholder.net/forum/gallery/)
Get snapping, or send in photos you already have. We want this to be a really special event. The CSSA calendar is always popular, and these are both worthy causes. If this is a success we will run it every year.
-
this is a fab idea, i have put a photo on
-
Super photo! That's two on now - come on guys!
http://www.accidentalsmallholder.net/forum/index.php?action=gallery (http://www.accidentalsmallholder.net/forum/index.php?action=gallery)
-
We have 8 photos on there now, go and have a look and get some inspiration!
-
they all look good i plan on trying some of the chickens at the weekend if they co-operate!!!
-
I have put a few up for starters :-)
Emma T....needing to soprt out her photo files LOL
-
Just thought I'd add to the thread to bump it back to the top.
I'm seeing some good entries, but we need more! Get submitting people
-
Some great entries comming through now, but we need more in "Show what you grow" (keep it clean people!) and "Flora and fauna" .. otherwise there's not going to be much judging involved for those categories! :dunce:
-
Is there a deadline decided yet?
With my broadband connection, it may take a while to get pics uploaded! And with the amount of time actually spent in the house, while the weather is so good ....
;D
-
Not really set an exact deadline but I thought maybe mid June? Calum, Rosemary - any thoughts?
-
Mid to end of June seems reasonable to allow people to get the shots they want in (hopefully) some decent weather.
-
Great idea folks - excellent time of year for it too ;D Bump ;)
-
Bump Bump
Get your photos in folks - and your donations - New Zealabnd have had another series of earthquakes!
Competiton entries close end June.
-
I just received this message from my pal Chrissie in New Zealand. You will all have heard that they have had more earthquakes - of the magnitude 5 + on the Richter scale. Please use the photo competition as a means of helping both the new Zealanders and the Japanese in their hour of need
When I first started these posts, I thought back then that maybe the worst was over and we could look forward to some sort of recovery. Wrong.
Monday let rip with a double whammy and the city and its outer regions are all back to square one.
The CBD is again full of rubble - the Christchurch Cathedral famous Rose window that authorities were desperate to save has been shattered and it reflects how the residents of Christchurch are feeling.
The Eastern Suburbs have again, for the third and in some cases fourth time been innundated with liquefaction. We are all hurting real bad and trying very hard to dredge up the optimism and happy outlook we once had.
This time, Christchurch is on its knees.
From my own personal point of view I am worried. Recent statistics sent to us from EQC (the government insurance provider for earthquakes)BEFORE Monday's episode, indicate that it will be at least some two years before all insured properties are assessed - if they dont run out of funds beforehand.
(See my post on the old BCGB forum - International Section, for details).
Every day we are getting "aftershocks" and the toll on our house is starting to show the strain. It feels like it is being wrecked, in slow motion, infront of your eyes.
We are yet to see any insurance assessors - now some nine months after the initial massive 7.1 earthquake last September. The structural damage is taking its toll and what was supposed to be our dream home that we had saved and worked for, will now become our greatest nightmare.
We could be staring down the barrel of eventual financial ruin - not only personally, but as a city, a region and as a country.
If you think this sounds melodramatic, consider this......
NZ has only 4 million people - reducing daily as people evacuate Christchurch. The business community in Christchurch is shattered. Whole suburbs of the city are facing demolition and relocation somewhere else.Christchurch is the second biggest city in NZ and has a big influence on the economy of NZ. Without jobs and broken homes, many people will leave - who can blame them? Parents with stressed children are also at their wits end.Schools are closed, sports facilities are closed - some for years - the damage is that bad.
Where will all the money come from to repair and re-build to a "first world" status. Those of us with family commitments, jobs and property have to stay for the foreseeable future.
Worst of all, the earthquakes keep coming and there are forecasts of still more to come.
What would you do???
-
Chrissie's words really bring home how these earthquakes have devastated people's lives and livelihoods in Christchurch. I have been a bit out of touch recently and hadn't realised it was still going on. I have some photos to submit but will have to wait for my OH to be able to do it, as I get in a bit of a fandangle with stuff like that ;D ::) :D
-
It's easy, Juliet - just click on the photo competition at the end of the top line and choose the category for your photo - then click on add a picture down at the very bottom. A dialogiue box will open - click on choose and you'll be taken to your own computer. Click on the photo you want to submit and then add a description if you wish.
-
Did that - it said 'an error has occurred - you are not allowed to view the gallery' :o
-
I don't know the answer to that unless Dan has put in a failsafe of having to donate first. You could try going to the donation page first to see if that works.
-
Still doing it so I'll ask Dan
-
CAn't understand that - I get into it no problem.
-
It's ok now - Dan has let me in :) I'll have a proper look on Friday.
-
My friend Chris sent me this - they are trying to have a laugh about it all - must be extremely difficult to do that! But you have to admire them.
Keep those photos and donations coming, folks.
-
Bump Bump
Last chance to enter the photo competition. Clsoing date midnight 30th June 2011 - Thursday. I'm about to start setting up the 2012 calendar for CSSA, winning photos in each catergory will be used and credited, so enter now. Get your name in print! Prize for overall winner.

I will try to get some in by then but sooooo busy......
-
I've got some of the cutest (well I think so ;) ) piggy photos I'd love to enter, but the site won't accept my Visa Electron :(

Where's Dan!!!!!! We need help, Dan!!! ;D

SOS Dan
-
I just received this from my friend, Chrissie, in NewZealand
Annie, could you please pass on my personal heartfelt thanks to all those who have entered the Smallholders photo competition.
As you know, things are not good here in Canterbury and Christchurch, so every little bit will be a tremendous help.
Im afraid I have not had enough time to contribute myself to the smallholders forum - but hopefully, as things calm down, I will be able to once again take part. I do enjoy following the topics - many are just as relevant here down under, as they are to you all "up there".
Cheers Chris
-
The photo competition is now closed. Calum and Rosemary will liaise and let us know soon which photos are the winners in each category, and which is the best overall. I will then commence work on the Calendar for Central Scotland Smallholders 2012. If anyone wins a section and doesn't want their photo in the calendar with credit to them, please let me know.
-
I destroyed my spine (again) on June 29th - but I'm just about up and about again, so I'll get in touch with Rosemary to see about selecting those winners soon!
-
Good grief, what have you done now - cycling, running, or weightlifting??? ::)
-
It's usually a combination of things... but in this case it was a jazz gig. Seats were appallingly bad.
-
In case anyone is wondering, I have reminded Rosemary she has to choose her winners, then consult with Calum to agree their final choice. Perhaps Dan would be kind enough to annouce them in this thread. The overall winner will have pride of place on the cover page of the Central Scotland Smallholders 2012 calendar which I will be able to start on when the decisions have been made, the other six category winners and runenrs up will have a month each, and I will prepare an editorial page to say that these photographs raised a sum of £320 including the Gift Aid Tax credits.
If Dan and Rosemary would like a TAS advert on the back page, I'm happy to do that and I'll also add the link to our Just Giving page in case anyone else wishes to add to that magificent total. Can I just say a big thank you to you all who supported the idea by donating and submitting photos. And to everyone else, we'll perhaps choose another charity next year and do the same - so get snapping now!
-

Have lots of really cute photos ready to enter for the next competition already ;) though I think I'll have to change my bank first, as the site won't allow me to use my Electron card to even make a donation ???
-
 Results coming soon!
Calum and Rosemary have agreed on their choices for winners, runners up, and best overall. Thanks to both of you, I hope you both enjoyed the task. ;D
They will be posted on here later today or tomorrow, when Dan has tiime, and thanks again to everyone who donated their hard earned cash! every little helps, as they say!

Congratulations to the winners, and many, many thanks to all who entered and donated so generously to the two causes.
We raised £125 for Shelterbox Just Giving (http://www.justgiving.com/TheAccidentalSmallholder), and more for the Christchurch appeal.
-
well done pikilily!!
-
Naw.......................well done everyone!!
We raised a wee bit of money...it all helps!

-
Excellent choices :) What a lovely set of photos and what a lot of talent out there.
-
Well done shearling !! just realised you were the overall winner
-
I reckon all in all with gift aid added the total probably comes to about £300 over the two charities. Mine was hidden and I know there was a fairly big donation sent to the New Zealand appeal.
-
FANTASTIC PHOTOS!!!

Can all the winners please email me good sized versions of their photos for inclusion in the Central Scotland 2012 Calendar, and let me know what you want me to credit you with - either your TAS name or your real one.
Calendars should be on sale around October, probably about £5, p & p extra.
-
Well done everyone :bouquet: :bouquet:
-
Please send photos for the calendar as soon as possible to [email protected]
Thanks
Annie
-
Well done everyone. Gosh and I only took the photo to share with everyone who had been so kind at helping us getting him on the right side of life. First ram, lamb and first photo win. So a really big thank you to all who helped him live. It made my day - one that was not going well at all. Dogandjo I will send photo but have just got in and have to catch up with work stuff first.
-
Hopefully the picture has sent and is alrge enough :)
-
Hopefully the picture has sent and is alrge enough :)
Yup, just fine
-
Come on you guys! I need to get this calendar on the go!
So far only Cameron, Pikilily and Shearling have sent me their photos in a reasonable size. I need them ALL!! and Soo oo oon!!!!!!
-
If you haven't already, I'm going to recommend sending them all a direct message each. If they haven't checked this thread for a while, they might not get updated that you've added another reply.
If that fails .... RELEASE THE HOUNDS!
-
Calum, I'll try that - but they are all regular contributors! My Freckles says she is not going to go after ANYONE since you didn't like her photo! ;) ;) ;)
-
I would have thought that would make her iritated and even MORE likely to go after people (ideally not me).
Also, I can state happily that I liked almost all the photos submitted to the competition. But the winners had to be selected, so a compromise on technical ability and emotive reaction had to be reached!
(uh, I blame Rosemary? *hides*)
-
Freckles is biding her time, and sustaining her strength be devouring a large rabbit brought home for her by Rio, her gignger tom housemate. ;D ;D

why have a dog and bark yourself? .... no, I mean why have a cat and hunt yourself?!!
-
Hi Annie, OH sent you our picture, was it not right.
-
Not sure - need to put list of photo names on here and mark which ones I have - difficult to tie up TAS names, Photo names, and real names/email addresses!
-
Ok, just checked and I've got them all - but some of the photos were called different names in the competition fromt ehir actual file names so I had to open them all up and view them! Anyway, thanks everyone, can get on with getting the calendar ready now. Might need input from Rosemary on events for next year............... ;D ;D
-
I'm finding it hard to tie up email addresses and names with forum names - so if anyoen wants their photo credited can they let me know what they want put on it please - own name, TAS name or someone else's name. PM me please - Pikilily, Cameron, Shearling, Womble, Sabrina and Cairnhill. Thansk, folks.
-
I suspect Cameron will be an easy one. Unless I've missed something, his TAS name is his real name! ;D
-
And what makes you think I'm not called Womble in real life? ;D
Annie - sorry, I keep spotting this thread at lunchtime when I'm at work, but then forget to send you the pics in the evening. Watch this space though!
-
Think i've sent you a pm, but forgot to save anything in my outbox, let me know if nothing comes in ::)
-
I'd like to remind the winners that the judges are still waiting for the agreed bribes!
-
will be in the post shortly..... ;)
-
That's what I like to hear! ;D
-
The only bribe I'd offer is to not let Freckles retrieve you! ;D
-
Positively generous of you!
-
;)
-
One litre of raspberry gin in the post....... I didnt send it in a bottle cos that would have cost too much. The only envelope i had was a manilla one which was looking a bit soggy at the corners when it went into the postbox. Do let me know when you get it....... ;D ;D ;D ;D
ET
-
Fantastic, I've been wanting to try some gin! I'll remember to open any soggy envelopes the right way up.
Actually, you've just reminded me of a book I received from Amazon a few years ago (there are no under 16yr olds reading this, right?). A book of figure study work (nude people for you non-photographers) and it came, well, what I've come to decide was "water" damaged. That was a fun return&replace email to write!
-
eeewww!!
Dear Mr Amazon.
Someone has enjoyed looking at this book, too much!! Please check the reviews ans send me one not so well appreciated!
Kindest regards,
ET
-
I see you've had practise with this.
What sort of books do YOU read? ::)
-
Emma, he is bad enough as it is, he needs no encouragement! ;D
-
Dear Mr Morrell,
Rather than tell you what books i read, perhaps I could explain that I have in my past been... an artist, went to Edinburgh College of Art...plenty of 'life' drawing there! And i am now a nurse...more bodies!! then i got into smallholding, so there are lots of animal 'anatomy' books
LOL, if you had a peruse through my library you could be forgiven for wondering....'can she read...these are all picture books' and 'whats with all the bodies'!!! and then finally 'eeeew where is she going with this?' ;D ;D ;D ;D
So whats hidden in your library? what would you not put on your coffee table for guests to flick through?
ET
Sorry i know this is more encouragment ::) ::)
-
So basically ... you've been obsessed by nudity in everything you've done!
I think they only books I've got that I would be ashamed for guests to see are by Dan Brown (really, really must get rid of those) and one cammed "Bread Machine Recipes" which was utterly pathetic with not one of the recipes tried being even close to usable. As for the various books on figure study ... well, a couple of photographer friends sat and browsed through them in a Pizza Hut once. Was fun to watch the expression on the young waiter when he took our order :o
-
LOL, forget the skeletons in the cupboard. Its bodies in the library!
:o :o :o :o

This reminds me of a t-shirt I saw when I was younger (too young to buy it myself ;)) Which had a picture of a nurse on it with words above "When I grow up I want to be a nurse, so I can help the sick & needy get better" and below the nurse were the words "and see lots of willys !" needless to say, my mum wouldn't buy it for me ::)
Sorry, a bit off subject - but it made me smile !

Photos are for the scottish smallholders calendar - do all the winners live in scotland?
???
-
No, but folks from England can still buy a calendar, so surely it all works out ok one way or another?
-
I don't have enough photos, so if anyone would care to send me some nice oens I can include them in the calendar - the prizewinners will be credited with their name, but not others. I don't care whether the photos come from Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales or Timbuctoo so long as it's Smallholders who have taken them, and preferably related to smallholding.
-
I don't care whether the photos come from Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales or Timbuctoo
Hmm, bit curt. >:(
-
I'm failing to understand why that makes you angry?
-
I don't care whether the photos come from Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales or Timbuctoo
Hmm, bit curt. >:(
Out of context - and in reply to a previous post. I really don't care where the photos come from so long as they are of interst to smallholders.
-
Not angry but that was the most fitting icon. :D
Anyhow, back on topic methinks.
-
Photos are for the scottish smallholders calendar - do all the winners live in scotland?
???
No I do not, but it was not what was said in the rules or in the spirit of the competition. Doesn't make me feel welcome though

Please do not let such sentiment taint this for you. The competition was open to everyone on TAS regardless of location, ancestry or taste in music. Your photo of the lamb in the grass was wonderful and deserved to win the category.
-
Thanks, not tainted. Just felt it was a bit off. Given so many members are from 'up north' I think those of us in the south are a bit sensitive ;D ;D Re ancestry we came from Unst so still not Scotland but you cannot get further north ::) ::). As for taste in music - I have none :o. Lamb is now nearly as big as dad and has a nice set of horns on him, good markings and currently a card score of 4-5. We have kept him intact and unlike his brothers will not be making his way into a plastic bag later in the year and may well be fully registered with the RBST as one of the 600 breading males.
-
Can I just say that I am very disappointed in this question of where the ophotos originated from. The whole point of this was NOT the photos but the GIVING to the victims of floods and earthquakes. Are we being a little parochial - in the global sense of the word ::) ::)

I mentioned my new address on here to send photos to when the competition closed. My Hotmail addresses were hacked and evil messages sent out in my name so they were killed some months ago. Please re-send to [email protected]

How is the calender coming on ??
The photos and dates have gone to the printer and I am awaiting a quote for the courier charge. Other than that it's a case of waiting for the printer to send them to me. As soon as I've seen the proof copy, I'll let you know. ;D
-
Great, going to buy some for Christmas ;D
-
I might be able to put the proof copy on here as it'll be a pdf - might be too big though so will need to check with Dan first. Will then put up an order form after offering to photo winners and CSSA members first. Only 50 being printed.
-
Can all the photo competition winners please send me their addresses for their prize calendars and let me know if they wish to buy any additional copies. I'm sending an email today offering them to CSSA members first, then anyone else on here can purchase them. £5 each plus postage, haven't worked that out yet but probably about 75p.
Front, back, and editorial about the competition are attached to let you see what it's like.(contacts page has changed before printing so this one is incorrect)
Thanks
