Yes, I was quite impressed but that idiot Dougie should take a hike.  Yes, long journey for the Irvine's, Jim said they left before 2 am this morning, won't be home till well after midnight probably. At least Sunday is an afternoon job, can maybe leave a bit later..

Not watching it myself but a friend is down there showing her bearded collies. No results in for them yet.

Thanks for the link Annie, I'd love to check and see if any of the Kennel names from our dogs pedigrees are in the show this year.
It was a real thrill to see Skyes Dad get best Veteran at Crufts a few years ago.

Jet is a lovely friendly dog, and his owners are lovely people.  Jim will be exhausted on Monday after all that driving!

Our boy's daughter who is owned by his dad's owner (she lives with her grandad) won the Yearling Bitch class - so chuffed for her  ;D

Did get the telephone call, but nice to see it posted  :D

Saw The German Shepherd win the group last night. Having had Shepherds for years I am a huge fan but I am not keen on the long sloping back which seems to be seen in most of the show dogs and not the working ones. Fallon was only shown once as  she was not happy in the ring but she loved doing the obedience, her sire Hundark Chuck-A-Mental of Vascans Dam Miss Mighty had a lot of German Blood stunning dogs but their backs did not slope so much as the winner last night.

We are all very surprised that dog got through as the KC give all Crufts Judges a strong lecture just before they go in the ring on winners having to be 'fit for function'  There is no way that dog complied IMO!  Numerous Judges have withheld awards this year for that reason.  The Bracco Judge withheld 5 I believe.

I was a bit shocked at the labrador, it looks nothing like all the working labs we see round here. They are all long-legged, sleek and slim (and black, seems like golden is the rarest colour these days). That one looked like a short fat dumpling! :) I have no idea what the standard calls for mind you. It must be difficult sometimes to marry what the standard asks for and what is best for the job, I guess?

Labrador retrievers are yellow, golden retrievers are golden.

Some of the Show labs are really heavy, far too much so, and I would presoanlly penalise those as not being 'fit for function' when judging, but then again many of the working labs are far too tall and lean to be any good in the field. Some are more like lurchers than labs.  Whatever the type of work they do, show or field, they should all fit the KC standard.  A lab should be built for endurance and heavy deep water work, not for sprinting

Yup, I agree.  But it's not always the KC's fault.  They act as mediators between Country of Origin and UK Breeders.  My breed have orange and white, liver and white, black and white, liver tricolours and black tricolours.  Never seen an orange dog either - and the orange and whites range from a very very pale colour (similar to lemon beltons in English Setters) to a very dark rich red (like Irish setters) The livers can look washed out or vibrant and shiny. All are acceptable.  What isn't accepted in France (and by default here in the UK) is what I personally think are the most beautiful of colours - sables.  The French seem to think they come from an input from another breed in the 80s - what they forget is that the Brittany or Epagneul Breton (along with all the other breeds) started off as a cross, and it is more than likely the sable came in at that time.  However, when France sneezes in our breed some people think we in the UK should immediately run with the box of tissues  ::))

Am I ranting, do you think?  ;) ;D ;D ;D

I was reading a book about deerhounds recently. The advice given there if you had a large litter was to cull some to get down to an acceptable number for the bitch to handle. First cull the weakest of the puppies, then cull the ones with too much white on them :'( :'( And it was only written in 1996, so not that long ago!

the bit about culling the deerhounds
would that not be practised to keep the prices up and the availibility low
lillian met a guy that had irishwoolfhounds(17) selling at over £1000 each sure beats collie pups??

Actually they did have ruling, before that, that pups should only be culled for health reasons, but I did think it was a bit vague.  It could have been got round.

I don't think so, the demand for deerhounds and wolfhounds is low anyway, not many people want a giant hairy dog in their house ;D

How would they ever know if pups had been culled, for whatever reason?
When we got our last dog, the breeder was very tardy about getting them registered. We were convinced it was so she could wait for the results of the liver shunt test, and not register any that tested positive (to save a few pennies). But even if they had been registered and then culled/euthanased, the kennel club would never know if they were dead or alive. There is no register of deaths for dogs, is there? I think it would be a good idea to have a death register, then you would know what health issues there were in any line of pedigree dogs.

You can notify the KC of your dog dies and they put it on their database, but it isn't compulsory.  I agree, it should be.  IMHO There are a lot of things the KC should be doing instead of keeping those huge expensive offices and Club for Members.

I think that the welfare of dogs and producing healthy dogs with good temperaments is only just rising up the priority list with the Kennel Club. It may make the top ten soon  :P

Glad the flat coat won by the way  :) :)

Yup, Jet is a super dog - 64 CCs I think, it was the oldest and the youngest - the peebe jeevy(PBGV) is Scottish owned too.

I was delighted that Jet won, he was a joy to watch. there was a program on later about buying a puppy. Showing puppy farms and what not to buy. Just why anyone one would buy from these people. This practice needs to be stopped, those poor animals are kept in horrible conditions and have no life other than being bred from until they are too old. It was mentioned that one farm had over a 1000 bitches, maybe a visit from the tax man is what they need.

I posted an Add on Gumtree and it got taken off saying something about puppy farm!! I was shocked but I since put other adds and they were fine, in fact we only have three boys left now, tonight we had a bidding war over our Yellow Male, so many people fell for him but hes going to a great home!!, we are def NOT a puppy farm, we love our dogs and would keep loads if we were rich!!
