Your local Animal Health office. I assume you have a CPH number?
-
yes have got cph number.thanks.mat
-
should the herd number come before the pigs ????????????????
-
No. you get pigs then they issue you with a herd number. Stupid i know but they told me its because many people was getting a herd number and then not getting any pigs. (micro pig people ) no offence meant
-
Animal health told me to get the herd number before the pigs,
it doesn't expire so doesn't matter
we have our other animals listed so we can be informed of any probs in the area :farmer:

you just do it when you get yourpigs, but if your getting flock/herd numbers for other things then just stick it on as well

The following link will let you search for your local animal health office.
http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalhealth/about/contact-us/postcode.asp (http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalhealth/about/contact-us/postcode.asp)
It is within one month of getting them. CPH is before getting them. Some Animal health offices will issue herd no. before, but most say you have to have pigs first
The law on this for England is :
The Pigs (Records Identification and Movement) Order 2007 part 2 section 4 states
Notification of holdings
4.—(1) An occupier of a holding who begins to keep pigs on that holding, and any person who takes over the occupation of a holding where pigs are kept, must notify the Secretary of State within one month of—
(a)his name and address; and.
(b)the address of the holding..
(2) When he receives notification under paragraph (1) the Secretary of State must issue an alpha-numeric code for each herd of pigs on the holding (the “herdmark”).
(3) The occupier must notify the Secretary of State of any change to the information in paragraph (1) within one month.
For Lillian (before she asks), in Scotland it is the Pigs (Records Identification and Movement) Order 1995, and there is an equivalent 2007 reg for wales.
-
our pig herd number has been in place 20 + years now but a friend of ours was told he should have had his herd number prior to the pigs, it coud be differnet in different areas though :o

No it can't -it is basically the same regulation in Engalnd, Wales and Scotland (and probably NI, but haven't delved into that yet) :) - However many Trading standards and animal health officers mis-quote, mis-understand and confuse holding no. with herd no. Can't blame them, with rules on cattle, sheep, goats and pigs changing every couple of years since F&M, I doubt anyone can spout all the regs. Last time I counted there were around 20 regulations on livestock, and 40 or more covering the farming industry that we are all s'posed to know.
For instance at an HSE course I did the other day, we were told that if you have an income from your smallholding, then you are a business for H&S law, and so should have class 1 or 2 ladders which are labelled as such (class 3 - domestic is not allowed), and should inspect these once a year, and note any defects in your inspection record book. Hands up who does this??? and hands up who has ladder inspection report book?? Thought so!
PS before you all start looking at ladders, this is only what we were told. I like to look for the actual regs, rather than what an official tells me, as the posts above show - it is not always right !
-
the captaian and oaklands (lillian will let the two of you get on with this one)
the ladder thing is correct we went to the same H S E get together it is the weight capacity of the ladder that is different
ANYWAY WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH A LADDER IT SHOULD BE CLIMBING TOWER OR SCAFFOLDING WE DONT WANT TO HEAR YOU HAVE FALLEN AND BROKEN YOUR NAPPER

That's why she climbs the ladder, whilst I stand at the bottom saying "you've missed a bit"!

Speaking from the Scottish postition, we got our CPH number first, then the pigs arrived, and the following Monday I phoned Animal Health and they issued us with a herd number. Simples.
-
what type of pig needs ladders. im scared now of them after a set decided to slowly seperate at its junction whilst i was up it. never been as scared. some how i got down steped onto a stone bench to get off it quicker and it colapsed.
-
thanks.will be contacting animal health tomarow.

Small boar with large sow - simples :)

We dont have a ladder, just some very old, very heavy, tall wooden steps. Should we borrow a ladder before our next inspection ..... remember this is france so they may want it in triplicate ..... 3 ladders, scary
-
surely the H S E in France cant be as daft as the British
-
You are joking ...... but thinking all that paperwork they generate can pile that up to make a sort of makeshift ladder.
