Title: 3 Hens 2 eggs?
Post by: welshlass181 on February 23, 2011, 01:12:59 pm
Hi i have been told that if i have 3 hens only 2 will lay.  Any thoughts on this?  I have had green tinged eggs for the last few days (normal size so think it's one of the hens) they're fine to eat just the shell is tinged coloured.  No change in diet  :P anything to be concerned about?  I have orpington blues (think thats what they are) and 1 black and white one no idea of breed.  There is a bantam (sex unknown) and a Guinea fowl (male) in the run with them :) they all seem to get along (I've asked advice on this as i was going to put them in a pot)

I think it just means that if you have 3 hens, expect only 2 eggs a day.  At the height of the season, ours lay about 6 days out of 7, but not yet.
The green tinge could be due to Araucana ancestry in one or some of your hens. There are at least two hybrids, probably more, from Araucanas - we have Columbines, two of which lay blue eggs and the other khaki.  Supposedly, if the cock used to sire the hybrid is from a white egg-laying breed, the eggs will be powder blue, but if the sire is from a dark egg laying breed the eggs will be green or khaki.

I remember reading somewhere that it takes a minimum or 25 hours for a chicken to produce one egg, so some degree of staggered laying would be expected.

As it is during the summer we were getting 6 eggs from our 6 girls pretty regularly.

Could your new tint be from a new layer? I find that mine each stick to their personal shell colour from day one. :&>

We have 3 hens that all lay beautiful huge green eggs with really orangey yolks. Their mum was a hubbard and their dad was a lavendar araucana bantam. We would like to try this cross again as they are so friendly and have not missed a day laying even all through the winter.

Thank you for all of the replies i really appreciate it.  Went out there this afternoon and i have 1 normal egg, 1 double yoke and another greeny/blue one.  I know for a fact that one of the blue hens is laying but no idea about the others as i've not been able to catch them in the laying box.  Not even sure if the bantam is a male or female lol but i think that the size of the eggs is quite different so i'm sure i'll find out soon enough.  It must simply be that the 3 hens are all now laying yay

if you are at home during the day you might find out by just checking who laid. Mine all lay at different times of the day so I could figure out who lays which colour. :chook: :&>

No idea what the breeds are apart from the blue ones.  I find the idea of my bantam (if it is a male) trying to mate with one of my hens as the girls tower the bantam and it would be funny to watch ....... much funny

i read somewhere it takes 25 hours for a hen to lay an egg so maybe you shouldnt expect 3 eggs every day. :chook:

I've had a light sussex that lays green eggs, although she has a slightly buff back so I've always assumed she must have a bit of some other breed in her that makes her lay different colours. One of her daughters has come in to lay in the last month or so and is also laying lovely green eggs and she's my one that has gone broody so I might hopefully have more of the same!

Our lay different amounts according to the time of year, during winter we don't get as much eggs as during summer!

We took out the guinea fowl as he was annoying the hens and the bantam is still in there.  We're now getting 3 eggs regularly now so it simply be just an egg colour for the last hen to lay.  Not fussed anyway as they're all healthy and the eggs are fab
