I bought 6 point of lay ( they not laying yet ) Light Sussex last week & some one gave me a Sussex Cockerel. I put them all in together but hes not showing any interest in them what so ever, he just sits with them, he's very protective of them though he goes for me every time I go in his run. Is there such a thing as a gay cockerel?

I suppose you sit and watch him day and night to ensure he is doing the biz? ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D
Seriously though, I'm sure there are such things as Gay cockerels, I knew of a gay dog once. You could leave him with full on heat bitches and he wouldn't touch them.

Up until 2 days ago we thought my daughter's cochin cockerel was gay too! He was totally mute and just sat with the hens, or ran away from them if they made any noise.
2 days ago he started 'muttering' to them, sort of chatting/growling but nicely. then all of a sudden jumped on one lol. spent most of the day treading his ladeez and then this morning we had our first cock a doodle doo!
we've had him since he was 6 months old in December! so he's about 8 months old now and only just started doing the business ;)

did you all fall off your seats when you heard his fine cock a doodle doo?? glad he has come of age there be no stopping him now

We used to have the occasional "Cockledoodledon't" come in where I used to work. They never looked "right"Small comb and tails.
Come spring he'll probably start working, just saving his energy

It could be that the girls are too young for him yet - my two only seem to tread the active layers, when I put new POL in they often ignore them for a while. I've assumed that they don't start treading the girls until the actually start to lay although with a large flock it can be hard to tell exactly who starts laying when.

Eloise hasn't heard it yet - she slept through it! Her teacher showed me some work she'd done after Xmas - a huge long essay about "My best christmas present - my cockerel" so I think she will be thrilled to hear him :) and then hopefully next year he can be a daddy!
-
our cockerels don't seem to tread the young birds either, could be he is just waiting for them to mature a bit or indeed to mature himself. Our cockerels do prefer the older ladies :D

I also heard of a gay dog as well, doesn't sound like this cock is gay if hes protecting them, he must be biding his time until they are older.

I am with bengt - they are probably too young and he'll have more fatherly feelings for them until they have matured. How old is the boy? And a week is early days! Give them time to adjust! :chook: :&>
