Lol! I've got a few weeks til I have to do my weaners but I'm dreading it. Good luck tomorrow ;D

Manian,
Pigs suffer from what is called "transient pain" - that is they respond to a pain stimulus, and then revert to normal.
Think of tagging as an injection you might have, yes you know it will have an initial sting, but after you don't spend the next hour rubbing your arm - it is done then over!
Do it whilst they're eating - quick and easy !
-
just had my tags through the post!!!got to do mine in next week..aarrghhhh definatly going to try while their eating, thats a good idea! :D
-
We slap mark - well OH does the slapping - I just cringe .....
-
its weird but i inject people fine.......... ;D
never had an issue with cannulating either !!!!!!!!
i'll let you know how today goes!!!!!!
-
Fingers crossed for you :)
It'll be fine ;D
-
It'll be fine,
I remember being really nervous before I did it last year but the the pigs hardly noticed. They were far more interested in the food ;D ;D
-
well
all done ;D
my son in law helped and one didn't notice - the others moaned for a second..............
phew
next timewe have 6 to do :o
:pig: :pig: :pig: :pig:
off to wash them now.....

Well done you!

Helencus & Littlemisspiggy: are they metal tags? In which case it's like using a stapler. When tagged, the pigs may shake their head a bit thinking something has stung them, and every now and then there's a teeny weeny bit of blood, but that's all. Once you've done the first one you'll be fine ever after!

I obviously used too much elbow power when I slap marked ours last year because the boys were VERY miffed and wouldn't let me near them for 4 days afterwards!!!!

Good tip thanks ;D

What are you using to insert the tags?
We've three pigs and whilst they're not for eating I will want to tag them soon enough so they can go to shows and suchlike.
-
Your Kune Kunes will get button tags sent along with their pedigrees - use the multiplier tag applicator (available from Fearings) to insert these.

AMBRIEL what shows are you taking them to

Was thinking about taking them along to our local annual village gala, if the council agree I can. There's been a lot of interest in the village since we got them and I thought it'd be nice for more people to get the chance to meet them and find out more about the breed.
-
the biggest problem is if you unload them into a pen (movement licence to get back home )the best way is if you can use the ramp of the trailer with a gate across the back that way there trotters never touch the ground no problem with the licence if you are interested in this method we can send pictures
-
Thanks Lillian, that'd be appreciated.
-
Manion good luck for this morning ....
-
thanks Hilliarysmum
loaded into the trailer with no hiccups and even gave them a wash as well..... ;D
the abbatoir staff were relaxed and unhurried........and we walked them into the lairage gently along and didn't feel rushed at all.
Due to collect them on friday :yum:

ps one of the lads asked for my name and i then asked if he wanted the pigs names as well!!!!!!
he said noooooo and laughed.... saying that was a little too hard..... ;)

My OH is working in the porcherie, he was impressed by the "humanity" shown by most of the staff and the speed of dispatch as well as the lack of stress.
