delilahs been off colour all week, completely shivering allover, lost quite a bit of weight, not eating as much as usual, sleeping outside instead of her usual spot in the barn, then today she had white discharge fom her vulva and seemed lame especially behind, and had trouble walking very far. vet diagnosed uterine infection. Shes got antibiotics for 3 days. she was due for AI next week but will have to miss 2 cycles now. apparently it wasnt preventable but not common at her age - 12mths. i got a scare cos i had visions of her dying from pnuemonia, which is apparently common after cold weather starts to warm up.
anyone had this with theirs?

we had this with Dolly in early 2010..we had 2/3 really bad days when we tought we were going to loose her!we gave her goats milk and a bit of banana (its all she would eat!)she had some electrolites from the vet but we had to get water into her so she didnt get salt poisoning!!!!after 3 days she began to get up and drink on her own and on day 4 she was weak but back to normal..she is in pig now at 16 months old and due in about 6 weeks!..i hope you have the same outcome....good luck and my thoughts are with you both.x.x.x :pig: :pig: :pig:

This problem is more common after a pregnancy than before and can lead to kidney infection and vice versa; it will take a wee while before she is back to herself, keep a close eye on her as sometimes the antibiotic may be ineffective ,if she doesn't improve further ie return to a more normal eating and drinking pattern over the 24 -48 hrs after her first injection call the vet again. This problem can kill.Sorry don't want to scare you but know of someone who's sow developed a uterine infection that spread to her kidneys and caused renal failure she died.I'm sure you wont be that unlucky.

luckily delilah is getting better, not completely back to normal yet but nearly.
has anyone got any idea what would cause a uterus infection in a 12mth gilt? never been mated or AI-ed. her condition dropped off 5 days before the discharge, but i thought it was the constant pouring rain, after all that snow, that made her lose weight. would the weather have given her a chill and triggered it? she has access to a barn but she does go for long ramblings of her own accord.
