Title: mineral licks
Post by: Karen Ockelford on November 12, 2024, 01:41:29 pm
I am a newbie small holder and have purchased a dozen Hebridean wethers primarily for grass management.   I have plenty of pasture which has been un-grazed for years and am intending to rotate the sheep around in paddocks, moving on when they have grazed each area.    I know they are likely to need hay when the weather is bad but my question is should put mineral licks out for them?

thanks
Karen

Grass at this time of year isn't going to be very nutritional compared to spring / summer

Unless you know what mineral defficiencies your land and /or the sheep need / have, it's a bit of a guessing game

That said, I don't think a general lick wouldn't hurt

The Denis Brinicombe range is good

Thanks for the guidance,  I think I will look into something for them on a self service basis and see how they go
