Title: New home required
Post by: jameslindsay on December 29, 2010, 08:10:04 pm
We are looking at the possibility of renting a property that has approx. 1 acre of land attached to allow us to keep our 12 goats. The house needs 1 bedroom as a starting point and we will not have silly money to pay for rent. We are in Fife, Scotland but will move in order to keep the goats with us, if any one has heard of anything please, please let me know. Thanks :)

Best of luck finding somewhere James.

We've been looking to rent for over 3 years & found the rental market to be a complete waste of time.

Stay away from agencies with their references, credit checks & "sorry, no pets" attitudes, they really don't have a clue.
Savills in Perth are prime example of this & CKD Galbraith  ..... i could write a book on that lot   >:(

E.G - We found a lovely old farmhouse with traditional outbuildings in moray, with a walled in 2.5 acre garden & was dealing direct with the estate owner when Savills stuck their nose in & screwed up the deal for everyone.

We found a 3 bed, 6 acre holding in Perthshire & to say it was perfect was an understatement. Viewed it with the owner & everyone was hunky-dory with our plans for it etc. Was asked to contact savills in perth to get the tenency agreement signed etc. I was told they'd phone me back asap as the girl that dealt with that was on lunch .... we're still waiting yet !!!!!
I phoned back every day for a week & was finally told that we'd missed out on it.... I'm not a violent person, but i came close to driving to their office & punching someone out    :D

We've had our fair share of time waster private landlords too, wanting fortunes for a damp-ridden 1 bed cottage with a window box..... it makes you wonder if it's all worth it at times

finacially James. you're probably better off sticking with Scotland.
round us, house & land prices are pretty extortionate ... but I'm keeping an eye out for you  :)

I know back where we used to live in Leicestershire there were many farmers/land owners with cottages, you had to know them via land agents to get an idea of who and where they are, there were a lot around Melton Mowbray way. Maybe look at Farmers mags and online. Those houses I put on Facebook had no land but were next to land, another option, trouble is fencing may be an issue with goats!!!!!!! You know that static caravan?? ;) ;) Joking apart, I would hate to be in your shoes and understand the need to keep you goats, all and sundry keep on about stealing our B&B customers, I hope they do not think we are rich as we only just earn a wage for one person ( I earnt more before) our neighbours are on about letting some rooms now!!! so another cut of our income !!!!!!!

James, taking into account the previous posts, I'm wondering if it might just be worthy our while phoning round some of the farmers and asking them if they have any cottages for rent?

I'll bet some have that never ever make it to any estate agency or rental company.  and things are tight for farmers just the same as everyone else just now, so a phone call might just do the trick.

my mum used to say "if you dont ask the quesstion the answer is always "no".  if you do ask the question it might still be 'no', but you have increased the odds of it being a 'yes'"  i kind of like that and try and remember it....

:)

You beat me to it Egglady ;D   Around here there are a fair few farmers that rent properties on their land and in some instances land to accompany it  at reasonable rates as they prefer long term tenants. Good luck with your search :)

Thanks to everyone. Yesterday friends offered us a cottage close by here but the garden is not suitable for the goats and I think we are going to have to accept that we can't keep them with us.

You will be able to find some good homes for them I am sure and in the futre you may be ab le to have them back. My youngest has to keep her dogs with her dad until she finds somewhere suitable.......I am sure it would be hard if we had to rent with 4 dogs as we had no choice when we moved here with 2, we rented on a farm and our neighbours rented land for thier shire horses so it can be done!!!!!!!

It might be easier to rent some land separate from the house. There are quite a few places that rent out fields for horses so if the fencing was suitable that might be an option.

Hi James, I'm not round the corner but not at the other end of the country - I would have to do a bit of jigging about but to tell the truth thats pretty much the norm around here - I 'think' I've plenty of hay so would like to offer to house your pygmy's so you get a chance to get things sorted and then get them back to their rightful loving owner - whatever happens in the future I'll be keeping mine one way or another so I feel for you and would like to help if you'll let me, all the best Clare

I would definitely think about looking for some land separate to the house.  So long as its fenced, and has a shed, or shelter for the goats - they will be fine.  I have goats at two separate places, not near my house, and we cope.

Also, another suggestion - perhaps someone could let you use an outbuilding, couple of stables, or similar.  Being winter, I am sure the goats would not mind having no field, obviously you would need to give them plenty of hay to keep them amused - but better than having to part with them.  My goats are in full time now and do not seem to mind.

So sorry you are in this predicament, and hope a solution comes along soon.
