Title: baked alaska

has anyone got an easy recipe for baked alaska?? please  :wave:

I come from an Ice cream manufacturing family - we always took the easy way out to save time - a bought sponge, ice cream, and a made meringue

Use a block of solid ice cream not the easiserve type as it melts too quickly.

Place sponge on a baking tray, place block of ice cream on top, we put jam on top too, then surround the whole thing with meringue, making sure there are no gaps at all.  Heat up oven to 230 degrees c, place in oven for 3 to 4 minutes.

It is the easiest pud ever to make and so so impressive!  all it needs is a wee bit of faith! ;D  It really does work!

Great!  Must try it again myself sometime.  Pity we don't still have out factory, difficult to find the hard blocks of ice cream these days.  went to my daughter fro Christmas Day, then again today with my sister's family - was going to be here but we had to relocate to Sarah and Duncan's house as I have no drainage (not for 3 weeks now) and no water since the 23rd!

We used to have baked alaska a lot when I was child. It does taste nicer with a homemade sponge IMHO. But it's not hard to make a quick sponge. Annie is right about the ice-cream, we used to use the cheaper ice cream that came in a block, not in a tub, as it was better and didn't melt too quickly. Don't know if you can still get it now.

Then serve with a hot fruity sauce - plum or something sticky - containing a lot of alcohol for the final touch (you can ignite it if you want)

will have to try it with the syrup that sounds yummy,with out the booze though as we dont drink, were both mad enough after a cup of tea or coffee!!!             baked alaska is definately on our regular list now.

mmm baked alaska, my favourite.  Its also nice if you can stick a bit of soft fruit on the sponge (raspberries, strawberries) before you put the ice cream on.  You can still get the blocks of ice cream but they aren't easy to come by.
