Title: incontinence
Post by: princesspiggy on December 18, 2010, 05:29:57 pm
we had our gsd spayed 2 years back wen she was 5yrs.
after 6 mths she became incontinent, shes fully house trained, but was dripping urine wen she was walking and would wet herself wen sleeping. she wasnt really aware of it so wasnt upset. the vet tested her urine and no sign of infection so prescribed Incurin and said this can be side affect of spaying and consequence of hormone imbalance. they said there was no cure and would need tablets for rest of life. they did work and if i ever forgot tablet, wetting would begin again. then after a year, i had no car so couldnt pick up her tablets for a couple of months and found her incontinence had stopped and shes bin fine 99% of time since. has anyone experienced this or know why it stopped wen suppose to be incurable?

This can happen when a bitch is spayed before her first season and is hormonal( as a woman going through menopause will think she has finished peeing when she hasn't) It very rarely happens in an older bitch but has been known. Your vet. if he is any good will be able to advise.

my dobermann greyhound cross is nearly eleven, she started with the incontinence thing about 18 months ago, she has bouts of it and i just use the medication as and when it is needed, it does help to strengthen the bladder muscles a wee bit that is why they can go for a while without,

I had both my German Shepherds spayed when they were 4 and 5. We had stopped showing and now had Jake the Jack Russell so did not want puppies. Fallon has been fine, she is now 13 but Tanya the younger bitch has had problems for the past 4 years. As they stay outside most of the summer she copes fine but during winter I have to get up during the night to let her out. She did wet her bed for quite a while but that improved and as long as i hear her asking out we do ok. She is not on drugs

Incontinence is not consistent through any one breed nor any breeds.  Some bitches are prone to it before spaying, some develop it afterwards.  Some are helped with drugs, others aren't'  It's just life as to what you end up with, I'm afraid.
