Brilliant!

We'll put a link to the "Friends" site and to the Palacerigg page as well.

Maybe we should have a TAS meet there in the summer, donations to the Park?

Phew!  Just got back.  We are all so pleased we can hardly stop grinning  ;D ;D ;D

Thank you so much for coming to the council meeting to 'Palacerigg', Ruth Dalton from RBST, Stuart and of course to our own Happy Hippy who has done so much to spread the word.  We got a group pic - and our knuckles rapped for using a camera in the council offices - will get it on here as soon as I can.

Where's the champagne icon?    :yum:

Good idea to have a TAS meeting at Palacerigg

A very happy fleecewife  :) :) :)

So here are the Famous Five , flushed with victory.

Thank you all again for your contributions, signing the petition, and all the general support and interest.  Please stay onboard though for Friends of Palacerigg Rare Breeds which will carry on with support and help for this wonderful collection of important animals.

I think the idea of meeting up at Palacerigg is a wonderful suggestion.
I'll be there  ;)

Fleecewife - hope you didn't get lost on the way home after dropping me off ?
Here's your champers to say thanks  ;) (http://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/Holidays_and_Party/party-073.gif)](http://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/Holidays_and_Party/party-073.gif)
Oooo I don't like photo's of me (and Ruth said afterwards, she bet she was mid-blink!)
It was great to meet everyone and hopefully form links and friendships that will last a long time and be of benefit to everyone. I've always said that I'm not into the politics of pig keeping, I just like pigs.............after today it's a sentiment I stand by ::)  ;D ;D ;D

Ooh thanks for the champers Karen - I needed that.  Er yes I did get a bit lost on the way home....... ::)  Never mind I'm here now with a roaring wood fire  :)

Let's blame the helpful wee man who took it for the quality of the photo - it wasn't one of us  ;D  (I always look a bit dodgy in photos so I'm used to it - of course I don't really look like that  ;).

I hope you all enjoy a nice quiet evening to relax then we can gear up to be Friends of Palacerigg Rare Breeds.  It would be useful to have a list of all of you who want to come on board, please

I wonder who wrote this. I wonder if the spokesman for the zoo realy said that (and I paraphrase) the tigers eat zebras in the wild. As far as I know, that's remarkable, since zebras are in Africa and tigers in Asia.

Fantastic news! (which I've only just spotted...)

When I stop being ill, I'll pay more attention to the friends' website... and possibly get along to Palaceriggs if the snow holds off.

Karen and I are working away on setting up the Friends of Palacerigg Rare Breeds group.  Thank you to those who have joined up already - there's plenty of room for lots more  ;D.

It's been too icy and today snowy for either of us to get up there for a look around and photos, but once that's done the website will start to look more interesting (couldn't look less so at the mo but, as they say - I'm working on it   ;D
Karen has given a post-victory statement to STV Cumbernauld so it will be covered there.  I have had less success with the Scottish Farmer, who phoned me for info but haven't put anything in the latest edition  :dunce:  Once we have a Plan we can try again to get the press on board - so far they haven't been too keen  ???

So do join us in the continuing effort - we need your support and so do all those  :sheep: :horse: :goat: :cow: :chook: :pig: and  :farmer: (stockman).

Rather handily a new DSLR and lens arrived yesterday. I say arrived, I mean I drove down to Citylink's depot in Motherwell to collect it given their massive backlog and having no clue when it might reach me otherwise.

Shooting over fences to distant livestock or through chicken wire in the enclosures is somewhat limiting ... but if the staff at Palacerigg are willing to permit access, I would be delighted to go around at varying points in the year to create a small stock library.

As it happens, this photo was taken at Palacerigg a little over two and a half years ago: http://www.flickr.com/photos/calummorrell/3177075763/

Hi Calum and John  - great you are joining the Friends of Palacerigg Rare Breeds.  I know where you are John  :D - Calum where are you?

Very cute photo.  Can you send it to me direct please if it's ok to put it on the website.  I'm hoping to get some photos too but don't have a very long lens.  The more the merrier.  Must remember that if there are any children in the photos we have to have parental permission - or we aught to - to put them on the web. I'm not totally sure of the law re websites.  But plenty of time for that.

Our numbers are growing  8)  ;D

There's no legal requirement to gain permission. If you are in a public place (and Palacerigg is part of that definition) then you have no legal right to privacy and it's open season for photographers. That doesn't mean asking permission and explaining the use first to keep parents happy is a bad thing - it can certainly help keep things friendly!

Where would you like the image emailed to? I don't think I have a direct address for you.

Thanks Calum.  To email, just click on the envelope icon to the left of this message , underneath my Hebridean tup photo, which will open an email for me, or you can take the address from it.
I too am hoping for a longer lens for Christmas for my Nikon - or rather in the January sales  ;D  I like the idea of taking photos in every season for an album.  I think 'palacerigg' has access to some photos too, which were taken last year.  If you look at my website (which has just come back after 3 days of being crashed), you will see the two types of pics we need - ones which can be cropped as long landscapes for the page tops and a lots more close-ups for each page (same provider as the Palacerigg site).

Hi - If it is ok Fleecewife can I please use this part to ask for high definition photos of some rare breeds - like for example - Borerays, Soays, Large Blacks, Gloucesters, Fell pony, Hackney--- It is for publicity for a very important event for rare breeds next year. The photos have to have permission for their use on a promotion website which I can assure you will be of great benefit to rare breeds and owners. You can send them tomy personal email - [email protected] and please send them as a file format if using hotmail.... if sent as a pic they compress them. Many thanks and best to all for next week!!!

Stuart, after the chaos of Xmas is all passed, you can come over and take all the photo's of my Large Black, Berkshires and Kune Kunes that you want.  ;D Okay, so I know Kune Kune's aren't a native breed - but the cuteness factor makes up for it !

Hi Happy Man - what are you planning?  I might be able to help with Soay pics.  Also, the multi-horned Hebs are rare although not categorised as such - only a couple of hundred around and I've got LOTS of pics of those  ;D ;D ::)  Do you need poultry too or just 4 legged?  I have Scots Greys.
It might be helpful to the Palacerigg cause to use pics of their stock, depending on just what it is you're need them for.

At last our Victory is in the Scottish Farmer - p5 of the Jan 1st 2011 edition.  There's nothing really about why they are important but at least it has a mention.  ;D

I'm not wanting to start a whole new debate here, but do you not think the Scottish Farmer tends to disregard smallholders / hobby farmers / rare breed keepers in favour of the 'real' farmers  :-\ The large scale, commercial guys who are ruled by the supermarkets and the need to produce as cheaply as possible ? I feel (and it's only my opinion) that they view everybody else as not important. Okay, maybe we're not real farmers in terms of numbers of animals or the level of time and money involved - but I think we have a very valuable role to play in UK agriculture in terms of rare breeds and traditional farming methods. Perhaps if they were to introduce a 'smallholder' section they would realise this ?(and boost their circulation figures in the process)

the facts and figures go against what you have stated happy hippy if you were to pay for liniage you would be in the next edition unless the editor decides otherwise       we will see what 2011 will bring

Lillian, what I stated was only my opinion - what facts & figures contradict that, I'm confused  ???
Do I need to pay for an article about rare breeds in order to get them to print it  ::)
I'm a pig keeper, I'm not made of money lol!  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

no the amount of pig keepers in scotland     there  are 600 pig movements from premises in scotland they cant all supply vion or cheale
news items are free you might get what you want printed but is it news worthy or of benifit to the person or company depicited

Yes, for all the people there are that keep pigs in Scotland - there's very little written for them  :( Unless there's a secret society that I don't know about  ;)
But I think it's high time there was (if there's not already and I just don't know about it) a Scottish pig society aimed at ALL keepers (commercial and 'hobby' alike) to try and up the profile a bit - maybe even organise a show up this end of the country  ;)
Now, where could we find a place, big enough to hold lots of people, pigs and cars with trailers AND a CPH number ? mmmmm...........I wonder  ;) ;D ;D ;D

In the current SF there's an annual questionnaire looking for your opinions and suggestions on the publication.  The drawback from my point of view is the personal details they want too - my business not theirs.  But perhaps if we all let them know we want more about smallholding they would have to listen.  While we might not have large acreages, there are lots of us - to buy copies, which is surely what they want.
I find the sneering attitude of SF to Organics to be quite offensive, and also a bit stupid, as again there are plenty of people in Scotland who farm organically - all pennies in the coffers of SF if they give them a reason the buy the mag. It comes across as a 'good old boys' publication, speaking to the  entrenched, traditional,  commercial scale farmers and drinkers.  But as we have to say - that's just MY opinion.
Still, I shouldn't be complaining as they have put in the paragraph about Palacerigg  ;D
