Title: Cupar Abattoir

Hello
Just got a message that the abattoir at Cupar is closing. Last day is the 2nd of September.
They suggested Wishaw/Shotts as alternate abattoirs.
Does anyone have other suggestions?
Does anyone have any feedback on them such as prices/do they butcher too/availability of slots?
It’s quite a bit further away for us, so might be a case of putting lambs to the mart now. :(

Wishaw is a large, commercial scale place, so we use Shotts.  They don't butcher, but butchers around the area collect from there then you pick up your meat sometime later (we have previously used Law butchers, very good, but haven't taken any stock for a few years now).  We arrange it with the butcher first then the abattoir.

It's a bit of a disaster, really, especially on the back of the collapse of the Minick Group. We only used Cupar for lambs; pigs and cattle went to Shotts, but it's a 200 mile / 5 hour round trip to Shotts. I'm glad we're not finishing any more cattle and have gone out of sheep. We might not do pigs next year, if I struggle to find a good local butcher.

I've written to Mairi Gougeon, the CabSEc for Rural Affairs, asking SCotGOv to take action on rural abattoir provision. I undertsand Mull abattoir stops operations this week.

So which abattoirs are still operating in Scotland, in addition to Shotts and Wisha'?

Same happens in wave after wave across England...  It's all just making it harder and harder to feed ourselves / locally... Which we should Resist!

Hi.
What animals do Dingwall, Grantown, Wishaw and Shotts take?
If I recall correctly then Grantown doesn’t take sheep.
Does Wishaw take private kills?
Could you share the reply you get back please Rosemary? I’d like to know how the government will support people trying to raise animals and provide local food for their families and communities.
