Title: never experienced anything like this!!!!!!!!
Post by: faith0504 on December 07, 2010, 08:40:53 pm
Early hours of sunday morning i was woke by 2 kittens playing on my head, i got up and took them through to the conservatory and bent over a wee bit to put them on there table to have something to eat, i got a very sharp pain in my lower back went back to bed and when i woke sunday morning i could hardly move, my oh did the horses, hens and dogs after 2 hours of trying i managed to get up with plenty of tears and pain, i sent to day pottering round the house it hurt to much to sit down, went to bed sunday night woke in the night in annoy and Monday morning i couldn't walk.
The doctor came out to me and what ever i have done to my back i have also trapped my sciatic nerve, i am on complete bed rest for 5 days a cocktail of sedatives, pain killers, and anti inflammatory, and can only make it to the loo with the help of my better half.
I have never felt pain like it and never in my life spent any time on bedrest, i cant sit up. struggle to walk, and have to stay in one position in bed or the pain is beyond words,
My oh has had to take at least a week of work to sort the animals and look after me, the doctor said it could be 6 weeks before I'm fully on my feet again.
All i did was bend over a wee bit, cant belief it

You have my sympathy, as someone who has frequently suffered similarly.

Speedy Recovery,

John

OK This may be controversial but here goes - previous skiing career created 2 vertebrae with corners worn down so the disks slip out of alignment very easily and therefore trap the nerve and cause the pain - first time was lifting a wooden box containing a snowy owl!!! Now it can be as simple as reaching for something from the wrong position. The first time it took 6 months for me to be back to normal (not that I'm normal) now it can be a few day but, and getting to the point, is the only thing I can advise is to be as active as possible - I know it sound awful but when I had to do things, just no choice my back did ease a bit and so did the pain - I find it very strange complete bed rest is advised as I find, even now a long lie gives me a sore back - all I can say is I know what it's like and lived with it for 15 years so know where your at - best of luck

i questioned the bed rest as i have always been told stay active i have done lots of care work and nursing, but the doctor said my body was suffering acute trauma, when i stand i either go red hot and nearly pass out or go stone cold and shiver and shake, he said my body needs to get the pain killers in my system, and get over the shock, before anything else can be done.
Thanks for your kind words,

Had sciatica about a year and a half ago - I honestly thought I'd never walk again the pain was so bad.  Nothing makes it go away although anti inflammatorys seemed to quieten it down.  I spent weeks in bed not being able to move even to the loo as you say.

It was my right side that had it.  I have always suffered with a bad back here and there, but I will never complain after the pain from sciatica.  You know its starting to get better as the pain moves up you legs slowly and back upto your back eventually.  I still suffer from severe cramps down my right leg but I seem to be able to lift pretty well again.

Hope you get better soon - dont over do it too early.

Ta

Barry

Years ago I did my back in bending down to wash a foot in the shower  ;D  The little things tend to catch us out - when you are about to lift something heavy, your body is prepared for it, but just bending down you do without thinking.

When I was nursing we used to give patients 2mg valium just to relax the muscles around the spine, which you tend to hold far too tightly because of the pain. I know it seems impossible, but try to keep yourself as relaxed as you can, especially when you are lying flat. Did you ever do that thing at school where you lay on the gym floor and had to work your way through your body relaxing every bit, then the teacher would come round and lift up your leg or arm and drop it, just to see how truly relaxed you were?  Try that when you lie down, relaxing each muscle group in turn.  With the painkillers to help, you will get better  :)

I do hope it clears up quickly and you can get back to what you love.

I hope you get better soon Faith. My good lady suffers with a bad back (and dopey other half)  :D and it seems that it always gets her when she's picking up something light up. The body is obviously prepared for the heavier things.

Healing thoughts are coming your way.

All the best,
Ian

Really sorry to hear you're incapacitated - not a good time of year with all this awful weather and livestock to feed and, just to top it all, Christmas on the way.  I wish you a speedy recovery.   Cheers.

Back trouble is the worst - I recommend long hot baths - though getting in and out can be challenging!

Hope you get better soon.

I've had sciatica a few times the first I was just putting something on the fire and when I stood up I nearly fell over with the pain :o  It was a good few weeks before I was pain free again but after the first few days it was significantly improved.

I still get twinges sometimes and an odd occasion the pain just shoots up my leg for no reason I can think of ::) but I find a sports/remedial massage therapist can keep me moving and that gentle activity is necessary tho if you've been told to rest up first then that's the thing to do obviously..

Look after yourself - I'm glad you have someone to help out with the chores as I reckon I did the longer term damage through having to feed ponies on my own throughout ::)

faith, i did something similar in the summer and, like you, even getting to the loo was a major undertaking!  had to use the back of a folded up garden chair like a zimmer frame as no way i could get there on my own!

i found that the anti inflammatories didnt really help and after a couple of weeks my doctor prescribed diazapam.  i was really, and i mean really, reluctant to take them as i thought of them as "drugs", but i was in so much pain that i did take them in the end and they helped enormously. like others have said, they acted as a muscle relaxant and once the muscles relaxed a bit, things started to settle down. it still took weeks for me to get better (to a degree) but they did at least allow me to move around a bit more freely.

i also found some hypnotherapy relaxation helped as well.  sometimes it's hard to relax the body on your own but if you have someone who can take oyu through a guided visualisation it makes a lot of difference.

hope you find something that works for you and you are able to enjoy xmas.  mine was in the summer so although i missed weeks and weeks of garden time and riding, it wasnt quite so awful as i think it would be at this time of year.

keep yer chin up doll!

my back went once, can be quite scary aswell as painful. i was just sat on floor watching tv, then all of a sudden i couldnt move! took me 20 mins to stand up. had to collect kids from school and was excrutiating trying to pick up baby and put in car. exercise is key im sure, ie swimming. i later did a health and safety course and what they say you can lift is way below what we need to do looking after farm. take it easy.  ;)
