My friend found his chicken dead in its pen this morning and her insides had all come out with an egg. can anyone tell me what happened, it was really distressing for him but would give him piece of mind to know what happened.
Thanks to anyone with any answers.

it sounds like a prolapse.
Many, many species (female - obviously!) can get this.
horrid... but better than it being a recurring problem for her & your friend.
was it a very big egg?
or an old hen?
or an ex-battery?

I think little blue is spot on. Happens to all sorts of livestock - uterus can come out with the egg or calf or piglet etc. With a valuable beast it is usually a case for the vet or the experienced stockman. Not a lot of chance when it happens to a poor old hen.
Luckilly it doesn't happen very often.

i know it's sad for the poor wee thing, like littleblue says it's better happening only once than having a constant problem.

My old duck died with an egg half out - probably a heart attack, quite common when laying - the strain I guess. Sorry about your friend's hen but as everyone else says, best just the once.
