The first half of the month is expected to bring mostly cold conditions with the risk of some rain, sleet or snow in all areas, especially early in the period. Some significant snowfalls are likely. Frost frequency looks like being notably greater than average. Towards the end of the period it should become mostly dry with widespread overnight frosts continuing. Temperatures remaining mostly below average, especially in the east and south east.
Second half
During the second half of the month a relatively quiet spell of weather is expected. Overnight frost and fog are likely to become widespread, and daytime temperatures will be mostly below the seasonal norm, especially in the south and east, but where fog lingers it will remain very cold. Probably turning less settled and milder towards the end of the period, with rain returning. decenber 4 th up date on the wether
Staying predominantly cold during the week ahead with the risk of further frost, and sleet or snow at times, as well as the chance of some rain in southern areas today and tonight before it turns colder again. However, what I’m really interested in at the moment is developments beyond next weekend. The different computer models are showing good consistency, and the potential for the cold to increase its intensity again is there, and for that renewed surge to have the potential to last for at least 10 days. If correct, it means cold weather is likely to be hanging Next week we're expecting the cold to tighten its grip, and we are looking at the potential for more severe wintry weather later on high pressure builds to the north of Britain once again. At the moment there is no end in sight to the predominantly cold weather, and all areas are likely to be at risk of further sleet or snow as we head towards Christmas. It looks as though there is the potential around even at Christmas. It looks incrasingly as though December could break a few weather records in the UK...Cold intensifies next week, December could break records

So, I may have a white wedding again then????? My eldest daughter will be just in from Austrailia, poor sole Bbbbbbrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Gary, where do you get these words of wisdom? It is so depressing knowing what weather we are to expect ::) ;D
-
What's even more depressing is that Gary seems to be right. next person to say "wouldn't it be nice to have a white christmas" DIES!!!!
-
Roll on the second half of the month. I'm well fed up now - I can understand why Scandinavian countries have an alcohol problem ;D It's kind of soporific though, with the stove on and lots of stews and dumplings and stuff like that.

Thanks, Gary. I haven't been out in the car since Friday evening - going to put sand and salt mix on the drive today and try to get over the bridge. Have super kids and neighbours who have offered to bring stuff in but it's not the same as getting out and about yourself is it? I'm just a bit scared of trying as at 67 there's no way I can push my car out of a rut or a ditch! Will report back later in the day - must go and let the other dogs out to play again before I try the car.

I have been stuck at home for a week now, lots of snow and very very cold. Although winter has arrived early this year I had already stocked up on all animal feed, freezers full as well for us and enough booze in the house to keep us going for well past the Christmas break. We should have all the family over that time hence the reason for stocking up early but it will depend on the weather. Middle son and his family live in North Wales, older son wife and daughter Peterhead area and the younger one wife and daughter Aberdeen. Mother coming for three weeks she is at Lesmahagow. Fingers crossed they all get here and back home again. ;D

well whot can 1 say please take a look at this

Managed to get the car over the bridge - nearly went into the field across the lane - down a steep bank, I'd never have got out of there! That report looks serious Gary, how did you find that website - it seems to be pretty good. I know I said it makes for depressing reading but the truth does sometimes hurt - but at least it prepares us. we are at minus 8 right now - at 6pm. ::)

the forcast is 25 pound every 6 weeks the 3 farms pay for the forcast last yere we new Christmas was the hit and this yere was right a gain where we live it helps getting stock in gas and food

Our pipes are frozen too :-[ feeling nervous about the thaw now.
I'm not sure about the science behind these forecasts, but if they seem to work...I will keep an open mind at the moment

Really grateful for the forecasts Gary - I seem to live my life by them! It was my first day out of the house today - stuck indoors for 8 days, frozen pipes, no hot water, aga not working etc, but hubby had managed to get to town in advance of the snow to stay with a friend so he didn't miss work/lose any pay, and I'd managed to get enough food in to keep me and the kiddies happy. Thank you  :)

We had a power cut last night- from 9pm until (scheduled til 3am). Lit the open fire in the sitting room as soon as it went off. Got up just before 2am to find it was back on, but couldn't get the boiler going again, and no hot water running, so knew pipes had frozen. Switched on all electric heaters we had, and fortunately by 9am water was running again, managed to start boiler and no pipes burst. Thank god. But when I was up at 2am- it was -17, the coldest night we have had. Typical that was when our leccy was off!

Been a but parky in teh Moorlands. Down to -17C last week. We had -14C. First snow 2" on Friday night 26th and second snow, another 10", Tues to Thurs. Now a bit warmer - from -2 to +2 and thawing. Even more lethal than the snow. No frozen pipes but a frozen sink outlet - now free. Hadn't really seen many icicles since I was a kid (and that was a LONG time ago) but they abound round here at present (must wear a hard hat!).
Main roads fairly good - side roads totally naff.
Main problem was keeping the chickens' water liquid. Should be OK tonight and following if the temps do not drop again.
Good luck to those still snow-bound. Luckilly I live only yards from main and passable road.
Motorbike in the garage for time being. Second bike stuck at mechanics till roads are even better.
-
Still having problems keeping chickens water thawed- came home today at 4pm, and it was already -8. Supposed to be like this all week I believe, until Thurs/Fri.

Snowing all day here in the Wee County - now freezing fog. I can't get out anyway, so hope I have enough food fro my animals and birds. (I have a layer of fat that I can survive on fro a good while ;) ;D

Awful, awful day today. Left for work at 8am, with a couple of flakes of snow falling from the sky. Very quickly that turned into a whiteout, and 3 hours later I completed the 24 mile journey to work. It got to a point very quickly that it was just better to keep on going than try to stop and turn around. Was only at work for a couple of hours before leaving again as snow just didn't stop falling. Only took 2 hours to get home, but I think the drive was scarier. I thank god the abattoir didn;t want me to take the pigs today- the conditions on and around the M8 were truly horrific.

Yep - nice morning here in the Borders, schools open, even the bus ran and I managed to get out and stock up on haylage. But OH travelld to work in Edinburgh, and it took him 2.5 hours, more than 1 hour already in Edinburgh. He then just got fed up, parked the car as soon as he could get into a side street and cycled into work. Decided to stay in Edinburgh for the night with friends - he couldn't face the return journey.
Here in the Borders - lots of new snow in the afternoon - I have absolutley no idea how I will get my lambs out of their field and to the market on Wednesday!!!!
BTW, which next week where you talking about Bamford? No end to cold spell here for the next few days!!!

Gary I know Strathdon and it can be wild! Glad you got home safely though. M8 has been a nightmare all day here, my nephew took 3 hours to do a 40 minute journey from work to home in Livingston, and my son decided not to try from Paisley as the motorway was closed due to an accident, and it's been snowing nonstop all day. I let the dogs out in the garden at 10.30 tonight, forgetting the gate into the front paddock was stuck open. 2 came back, no sign of Allez despite shouting and whistling so I reckoned he somehow must have got out, although I know it's secure in my heart. Got togged up, went out the front gate, struggled up the drive onto the lane whistling and calling him all the time, thinking somehow he'd got across to the filed over the lane or worse still on to the bypass or the railway line. After about 20 minutes and starting to cry, fearing I'd not find him in pitch black and heavy snow, suddenly realised he was standing beside me, on the inside of the fence. I cannot repeat the words that came out of my mouth because I do not know such words ;) ::) :-[ Suffice to say he practically crawled down the paddock, through the gate and heeled all the way back to the house. Just glad there isn't a webcam on the bypass, I must have looked a right sight :-[ :-[ I guess the paddock is secure, he just didn't want to come in yet. ::)
