Title: Hedging grant GYO?
Post by: Penninehillbilly on August 27, 2021, 01:43:30 am
Hi, thoughts please
We applied for and been offered a hedging grant.
Looking up the tree/shrub prices I realise the grant won't go very far,
We already have willow on the land, if I take loads of cuttings, can I sell them to myself ? Anybody ever done that? (Only as a small part of the number we need)

Why not use your grant to buy as many conventional hedging plants as you can - like hawthorn, and use your free willow to fill in?

Is there not  requirement to show the percentage of trees purchased in total which covers the grant?

Have you looked at woodland trust packs?  often good value.
Normally all you have to prove with a grant is you followed instructions on spacing and fencing (by photo) .... Ive neber had to show receipts.

The grant works out at less than £2 per plant, including protection, I'm hoping for quite a few hollies, I tnink they are great for wildlife and farm stock, but they are quite expensive compared  to hawthorn etc.
Without going back to the details (too many emails back), I think you do need to show how many you've bought, will double check tomorrow.
I'll have a look at the woodland trust site tomorrow.

Look at woodland trust Morehedges scheme. They supply everything and you pay 25% of the cost if you meet the criteria.
