just watching it tonight and their hens got red mite (glad we arnt the only one) just makes me laff them dusting the chickens in daytime with powder when red mites are off the birds in the daytime! ;D

it wasn't on when the program said today - had to watch Donald Trump instead, trying to kick people out of their homes in Aberdeenshire. I got so angry I still have a stomach ache! I so wish Giles and Sue were on instead!!! :&>

anyone else notice a distinct absence of ear tags? perhaps I'm just sensitive after having to get my goaties done ;)

Missed the first one of these so tuned in last night.
heartily disappointed, just a complete p*** take. Gives a totally wrong impression of smallholders and what its about, hate Sue & Giles trying to out funny each other. Won't be watching anymore coz they just make me cross.
Very cute Glossie pigs though but why go thro the house when they could have used the gate at the side that they used to bring the goats out of suppose taking them thro the house made funnier tv. NOT.!!!!!
This was a good chance to show how self suffiency can work especially in these credit crunch times, yes by all means make it fun but this was ridiculous.

i'm not sure it is meant to be an accurate account of smallholding life. my understanding was that it was supposed to mimic the original good life - that's why they are dressing the way they are and also doing the margo and jerry bit?

we were wondering how they had so many eggs from just 4 hens, he had more than 8 just after 2 days, do they lay more than once a day in the summer?

I totally agree with Fowgill Farm. I find it irritating. I don't like the way they handle the animals, and the egg in mouth routine was unpleasant to watch. >:(
Re the eggs, I noticed that too. Hens lay one egg per day, and not every day.
It's a program full of inaccuracies.
Did anyone else notice how no-one at the allotment wanted to talk to them?

I couldnt believe they lit the ashpan when trying to light the rayburn, more like city slickers try to do country but, well, fail!

the constant p*ss takey attitude wore very thin after about 5 minutes . I expect I am being too critical of the program , but it just seemed like a mickey take of yuppies going feral .... well what they would think is feral anyway . It is about as near to smallholding as HFW was with RC .
I just don't see the point in doing it really . They are trying to see if they can set it all up as in 'The Good Life ' from the 70's , before the internet etc ...But once again , they aren't living there , so can't be looking after the animals or even producing enough food to live on . Like HFW , they are creating an image that doesn't exist in reality . From what I gather , he continued to live and work in London with his family . I own six acres and I know how hard it is to do everything on your own especially if you don't have "my very good friend " who will give you a flock of sheep for a roast dinner some time next year , or will take you into London to sell 20 bottles of home made tomato sauce on a stall ????? it is all utter crap really . But if you accept it as such , then as with HFW in RC , then it could be ok for 5 minutes . But why choose Sue Perkins ? she wouldn't want to live with Giles if he was the last bloke on earth , maybe if he was the last woman though !!!!
I watched the first one on iplayer , and waited to see if she actually could manage to utter at least one sentence in a normal speaking tone ...ie not piss taking , I can't remember hearing one .
I shan't be watching any more , even though it was funny watching Giles Coren acting like a big fanny if he touched one of the chickens
It comes over as one big piss take . On that level it succeeds , but seems to offer absolutely nothing else . As the original 'Good life' didn't portray smallholding ( it wasn't meant to , it was a sit com !!) neither does this .
I am 'a grumpy old man' now , so this is just my jaded view of what I think is a load of crap . If others enjoy it ? good luck to them and ignore my comments , they are just my opinion .
'The Edwardian Farm' series has just begun now , and although it is the same old preface again, as with 'Tales From the Green Valley' and then 'The Victorian Farm' , it does actually show some form of what life was like , albeit in a very living museum type of way , and they don't actually live there either ..why does everything have to be fake ? But in my opinion , this is a much better effort all together . I just like seeing all the old equipment though really , some of it is even older than me !!! lol.

I watched the first on i-player now and I must say that it is exactly what I was expecting of the combination Good Life and G&S...It's only meant to be entertaining (to townies - so was the original series) and they don't have a clue, they don't live there and it is not a documentary. Lighten up, folks, it's only a TV show - nothing to do with us! I will enjoy the Edwardian Farm, though. :&>

LOL! Yes, but how are you supposed to learn that sort of thing? I mean, we're due to move in with a Rayburn shortly, and whilst I may not light the ash pan, I freely admit I won't have a clue what to do with it. When we first got hens, I didn't know how to pick them up either, and they had to put up with my fumblings for a few days until I finally found a video on Youtube that showed the right way. It doesn't mean we were wrong to try though, and I like to think our girls are happy enough with their lot. ;D.
All I'm trying to say is, if you're not born to that kind of life, how would you know what to do? All we can really hope for is that we learn as we go, and eventually come to a place where we can look back and smile, in an "of course, I know better now" sort of way. I was surprised at GC though - as a onetime food critic, he didn't seem to know much about food, or how to make bread etc.

Agreed! However, when this programme is all my friends have to inform them of our chosen lifestyle, it's not hard to see why they think we've completely lost the plot!! If it wasn't for TAS, I think I'd start thinking that too! :D

Womble - if you need any advice regarding a rayburn, give me a shout! We have one, ours is solid fuel though, not oil. It can be a pain in the arse at times, but if yours is woodburning then let me know!! Hauling, cutting, splitting and stacking all the wood you need keeps you fit though! You'll tell me yours is oilfired now wont you! ;D

Just watched Edwardian Farm - think I must of missed an episode or two (don't usually watch TV at this time of day), and really enjoyed it - have seen the other two series, but like rusty says, this is a bit more, well, doable. Some good tips for anyone trying to be self sufficient.

Couldn't make out why they were milking a French Alpine goat into a wide flat receptical that they coild barely get under the goat and was bigger than the one they used for a cow!They'll be telling everyone the milk tastes odd next! ::)

Just watched 5 mins of it on iplayer. Absolute rubbish. I would give anything for half the chance they've got and all they can think of is their next cheap gag. Giles and Sue live the Joke Life more like. :-[
