Title: Hot bins
Post by: Lesley Silvester on May 17, 2021, 12:39:51 am
Somewhere I saw and replied to something about hot bins. I now have two in use and wanted to find out how the poster was doing with hers (can't remember the name but I'm pretty sure it was female). I can't even remember where I saw the post, whether it was on here or possibly Facebook so I thought I'd try here first as being a more likely place.

Anyone remember seeing the post?

That would have been me.

I bought a mini hotbin and for a while I just couldn't get it up to temperature.  Eventually I gave up and decided to remove everything from the bottom and start again.  I was surprised to find reasonable compost in there, so I used that in my vegetable raised bed which is fenced off so the dogs can't get in, and the stuff that wasn't great was put back in, and I carried on from there.
So far the temperature is nearly where it should be.  I think I've put it in a cool spot in the garden as it's the same place I had a jasmine and fuchsia and they have both died.  So I'll try to move it next time I empty it

Thank you. I remember now that it was you. I bought two full-sized ones (OH paid for one for my birthday). The first one, sited under a lilac tree, I half-filled from my existing compost bin then added to. I then started on the second one sited in a more open space. Number one bin never gets above 75C whereas the one in the sun has reached over 90C when the sun is shining. I'm going to move number one, when it's empty, to a more open space.

How long did your mini one take to produce compost at the bottom?

A good few months - much longer than it should have, but that was down to me not reading and following the instructions properly.  I too will move this one when it's been emptied.

Yeah, I'm sorry - it was pretty tenuous, wasn't it? (Sorry to hijack your perfectly sensible thread, MGOM)

I'm bad for these. The other day, the Shepherdess gave me a telling off for walking through the paddock singing "it's a nice day for a.... white wormer"  :innocent:
