Title: Bottle Fed Lamb
Post by: Deacon Folly on May 08, 2021, 03:50:13 pm
How and what age to wean off the bottle?
Had a set of triplets  6 weeks ago and he’s the only survivor.
Ewe dried up after 36 hours so has been bottle fed but stayed with ewe in the herd.
He’s eating grass and has 1 litre per day split am and pm.
Do I just finish the bag and stop? Or wean him off with less milk daily.
Thanks in advance

Does he have creep ? He needs that along with grass for a good while after weaning as its high in protein and will keep him growing. Eating creep is a precursor to weaning off milk. With bottles I used to halve the amount fed for a week and then cut out the evening feed for a few days. Then stop the milk altogether. In place of milk they would naturally eat more creep.

With adlib I stop abruptly... sounds harsh but the weaning process this way was very smooth.

Hi
Thanks for replying
Yes he’s having creep twice daily
I’ll reduce the milk as you’ve mentioned and take it from there
 :) :)
