Title: Cockerel crowing - is this normal ?
Post by: Ghdp on November 04, 2020, 06:31:23 pm
Sorry if this is a daft question but I have never had a cockerel before.
Our bird looks very happy and has started to tread. He crows loudly and normally ( as far as we can tell) but sometimes a crow is followed on with an additional much quieter noise. The only way I can describe it is a bit like there is still some air in the system!
Is this normal? I only hear it if he is within 10 metres of me so only noticed today when I was clearing up outside.

Our last cock did that too, especially when he was younger. It sounded as if he lost the will to complete the crow and always had us in stitches  :hughen:  A sort of 'cockadoodleuuuuunh'  ;D   Maybe he's embarrassed

Yes, we had one who finished his crow with a sort of Jimmy Saville warble. It was cockadoodleoeoeoeoeoeurrrrggggg. Thankfully he never mastered 'now then now then'  :o .

According to The Oracle it's to do with how bird lungs work, with big air sacs and small lungs (or something) and that's why birds can sing on the inspiration and the expiration, which humans can't.  I don't quite see how that explains our wheezing crowers, but thought I'd add it to the mix  :innocent:

That’s reassuring. Thanks

I wish, Womble, you hadn't mentioned a certain person.  I was beginning to think his name had been expunged from UK narratives !

(As a complete aside:  I do ponder why "the media" will repeatedly mention the actual name of people involved in atrocious acts against humanity conducted in the name of some "off the wall" organisation or another.  To my mind the individuals involved should not be "allowed" a public persona.)

I am in total agreement with you there [member=152775]arobwk[/member] , especially when they find out and announce the names of terrorists who have killed a lot of people and maimed others.  Their names and their foul deeds should never appear on this earth ever again.
It must be so terribly hurtful to the victims
