One of my 10 year old ewes, that has never lambed and is not in lamb now, has just started having a small amount of blood coming from her vagina. It's sometimes after she's wee'd but not always. I've spoken to my vet, who suggested taking her temperature to see if there was any infection. It was slightly raised so she's had Pen and Strep for 2 days so far. She's not weeing all the time, is eating and pooing normally and is behaving as normal. I just wondered if anyone had any ideas about this. Thank you

Possibly Pyometra, especially if the discharge starts to smell and the animal becomes more unwell.

Thanks for the reply Fleecewife. I've never heard of that. I'll see if I can get find out more about it.

It's inflammation and infection of the womb bed - cats and dogs get it, but also sheep and cattle (humans too I expect) I seem to think it happens in maiden animals after an oestrus cycle. My wolfhound had it and the main symptom by the time she seemed unwell was a very stinky, profuse discharge. Cure was removal of the uterus - I got to assist the vet during surgery with the Wolfie
Lets hope it's not what your sheep has.

Thanks for the information, I hope my sheep hasn't got it. Hope Wolfie is fully recovered.

She did recover fully, thankfully, although of course she could never have puppies. She lived a short but eventful and happy life, but all this happened quite a few years ago and she is long gone.

could it just be a sign of oestrus? even if she has never Fallen pregnant that doesn't mean she doesnt come on heat..

Thanks for the reply Kanisha. I wondered that, but I've never seen it before and no one has said it could be. I didn't know if sheep would show a loss of blood whilst cycling. If it was that, how long do you think it would last? I'll see how she goes. Thanks
Fleecewife, glad Wolfie recovered and enjoyed the rest of her life with you. ????

The discharge has now stopped thank goodness. She's had a course of antibiotics. I'm really non the wiser as to what it was but hopefully that's the end of it.
