This constant change from cold frosty mornings to days of 14 decrees is playing havoc with my Shetlands. Yesterday they were all sweating then last night it got cold again. They have there thick winter coats. Last year Pitstop who has to be stabled all year had to have a chest clip and under his tum, I had hoped not to do that this winter but he runs the risk of a chill if this keeps up. Without a doubt weather is changing through out the seasons and comes with all sorts of problems. My neighbour still has Swallows unheard of up here at this time of year.

the next time the wether changes it could be winter last yere winter got under way from november the 8th with minus 8 i do hope we have a green christmas all the best

im having the problem with my shetland mare she is sweating up at night, she has got herself a nice winter coat coming through and now bless her she is to hot, my foal is doing ok, and my big mare does not grow a winter coat, so she has gone from rugs on at night to none on again, which i dont really like doing but she would be to hot with it on at the min, mind dont suppose we should complain the longer this lasts the shorter winter will be, fingers crossed :wave:

My TB has his winter coat and I'm having problems as when I turn him out in the morning it is very cold but warms up during the day when I'm at work so he has had a couple of days of sweating but I don't want to leave him without a rug as he has weight problems and will burn off too much if he hasn't got a rug on. This week seems to be forecast as windy so shouldn't be a problem fingers crossed

None of mine wear rugs,alhough Picasso had one in extreme weather last year because he came over from Spain in October and hadn't had time to gain weight or grow a proper coat.He soon got fed up with it though and could get it off in ten minites then it was hunt the rug time ;D

Our vet said that the ponies in the New Forest have grown very thick coats this year. Could be they know something we don't - or perhaps they remember last year

My cobs are VERY fluffy now, fluffier than last year so, they are either preparing for an horrendous winter or, just remembering last year! I have a TB here I am looking after as his mum has just had a baby, he is in a rainsheet but is the fluffiest I have ever seen him, am keeping him minimally rugged so he will grow a good coat, he'll only get a heavier rug when he absolutely needs it.
