Title: abattoir prices (ireland)
Post by: Glaswegian on October 27, 2010, 07:59:56 pm
hi all.

i have two pigs ready for the green mile in the next week or so. i have been quoted a price of 75c per lb for kill and butchered. does this sound reasonable? i dont know the average price as this is my first time with pigs. (dreading the day).
  :(
                         cheers.johnie.

A friend of mine brought a pig to a registered guy in Carrigallen, who charged him 170 euro for kill n' butcher. Thought it a bit pricey myself. I shall shortly be bringing a pig for slaughter in Andersons Abbatoir in Mullagh, so i'll let you know how I get on.

Like I say my friends, t'was not I. I don't even know what he got for his money. I don't think he's too put out as the pig was a gift to him and his family!

hi folks.
thank you all for your replys. gavo.that sounds a reasonable price.would you have a phone no for the abattoir you mention? c day.that price sounds better again,60 euro for kill and cure. which part of donegal is it? i am in sligo,so south donegal might not be too far to travel. also would anyone have any phone numbers for abattoirs in the sligo/lietrim area as the list i got from npits doesn't include any,and i cant find any of these abattoirs listed in the phone book.

                                                   cheers.

hello the abbattoir is in castlefinn  about ten mins from lifford in the east of the county, so dont think it would be worth your while in tavelling up from sligo, the one gavo uses would be closer to you, it dosent matter what size the beast is he will just charge what he thinks it takes he charged me 100 for a four year old boar but this was more like a small cow

The fellows name is Sean Rooney tel no:0719822846 [shop] 0872262744[mob] No size limit on pigs; he can also do all the butchery work as he is one; he has a shop in Ballyshannon we don't use him for that though they go to another butcher.

I am just getting ready to send my two Berkshires off for slaughter and butchering. Heres what i have been quoted

Abottoir ; £25/pig kill and deliver to butcher of choice

Butcher;  £1.20/kg butchering and bagging/vacuumm packing calculated on dead weight (not butchered weight)
+£2.50/pig for disposal of unusable bits
            +£0.50/kg for gammoning
            +£2.50/kg for making sausages

so all in, I am calculating about £80 slaughtering and butchering costs per 70kg pig (no gammon and no sausages)
that was based on a 60% dead weight/live weight, however the butcher has now said that one should calculate for 70% dead weight.

how does that sound??.... this is my first time with pigs. We do have a butcher friend who comes to the house to do our sheep. he would charge about £50 for the evenings work, which would bring costs down a lot. But i think for simplicity we will go with the butchering at the shop...... cos i will be spending the following days making my own sausages, am i mad????....i want to guage how much work is in the butchering before committing to doing it here at home the next time!

The abbetoir at Shotts (which I'm using this time cos they've got an attached butchers) is just under £20 for kill and the butchery is 64 pence per kilo (though I'm not sure if that's live or deadweight, but I'd presume deadweight ?) they don't charge extra for sausages (so I was told by the guy I spoke to) if you want bacon or cured pork add 64p per kilo for the amount you want. There is an extra charge for vac packing but the guy I spoke to wasn't sure how much it would be (the boss is on holiday  ;))
But, by my calculations I'd get a 70Kg pig killed and butchered for around £65. But we did pay more for butchery last time round, my local butcher charges 80p per kilo so that would work out closer to £80.

Oh and I don't think I'd be rushing into butchering in the house - my kitchen's not really big enough - and I wouldn't want all the mess to clean up (But that's just me ;D) You'll have to let us know how tasty your boys are, got a vested intrest now I've got some Berkshires too  ;)

hi all.

gavo. i rang sean rooney and his quote is 75 euro per pig killed, butchered, bagged and tagged, plus 10 euro per pig for curing. i dont think that is too far out on price certainly a bit better than 170 euro.
  thanks again for your info.
                                             regards.johnie.

I paid €150 per pig for killing, butchering, bagging, curing, rashers, sausages and freezing at Crowes, the gourmet butchers, near Tipperary Town and consider it was well worth the 150km journey.

Conor

I have tried to PM you but it doesn't seem to want to work;can you tell me if the abattoir in Donegal is a large commercial set up or a smaller/small independent concern if it's the latter could you give me contact details for them please.
