Title: magpie menance 2
Post by: langdon on October 23, 2010, 09:25:10 pm
we got a different problem ere with magpies, we got two that keep attacking our back downstairs windows
( downstairs beddroom ).
they jump at the windows jump back again and come again to attack the windows >:(
it is so annoying and they do it for the best part of the day.
has anyone ever had this problem?
any ideas how we could catch them or get rid of them?
thanks langdon

Yes - I have a group of jackdaws that regularly attack their reflections in some of my windows.  I can't seem to stop them.  I quite like jackdaws, mainly because they mob the sparrowhawk when its around which alerts all the other birds, and also my white doves, so I don't really want to get rid of them.  But if I had magpies I would try the Larsen trap.

I think I just posted about how to make one on another thread.

all the best

Do they do it when the curtains are closed?  I suspect like Sue says it's their reflections they are attacking. You could try keeping the curtains closed for say a week to see if they go away. (to someone else's window  ;) )

Maybe not related at all, but I get loads of little birds pecking at my windows - they're picking off the spiders that hide in the wood crevices. It might be something like that, but the reflection thing sounds like a good bet given their love for shiney things ! Just stop washing your windows lol! Or invest in some of the stick on stuff for obscuring them  ;)
Catching them would be easy - just open your window  :o or then again...............

Good luck with them Langdon !

I always think this is where the idea for that Hitchcock horror birds film came from.  Generally a pair of mine will spend the best part of half a day on and off flying at the window and giving it a hefty clout with their beaks.

::)  I think we need a smiley with a light coming on over its head - I have just had an idea (which I might also try for myself)  Get an old mirror and put it propped up somewhere nearby, perhaps in a bit of foliage and I wouldn't mind betting that will entertain them for hours.

All the best
