Title: Waterproof jackets
Post by: Rosemary on September 29, 2010, 11:55:49 am
It's bucketing here today. I've found out that my waterproof jacket isn't. Anyone recommend a good waterproof jacket? I don't want one that has a heavy lining - the hot flushes  ::) dictate layers, so I prefer a light jacket that I can add a fleece or two underneath.

I have a Quiksilver one with a zip in fleece gilet - brilliant!

 >:( In this rain ??? A black bin bag or plastic cape, I think is the only thing. I have the same problem, I have several waterproofs over the years and once they have been washed and worn a few times they loose thier waterproof ness even when re proffed, and I hate the shorter ones as then you end up with wet tops of your legs and full wellies. I used to find the wax barbour great but it looks rough and smell now (like me!!) I used that when I went pony treking and I did stay dry...DOn't you just love those hot flusses, I get one hot one followed by a cold one.....

That sounds good. I like a longer jacket too - don't want to get a chill in the kidneys, as my old Ma used to warn about. I've had waxed jackets before too but find them really bulky.

Look up any uk ex military surplus stores online & have a look

http://www.meanandgreen.com/army//Waterproof_Over-Jacket/250/1439.html       £15.95 +p&p

Plenty of room for a fleece under those

I bought one from my local hardware/agri/builders shop that apparently farmers use.  It's great.  Very lightweight and big enough to put layers under.  It's totally waterproof.  It's called Flexothane Classic and was about 40 quid.

I have a really old Peter Storm coat, my mum gave it me so second hand - its really long, styled like a barbour and there's just a 4 inch gap from the coat tail to the top of my wellies!

image that, topped off with a tweed farmers' cap that I found in my late father-in-law's wardrobe, never worn! I wear it for effect - makes me laugh... but it keeps the rain and mud out my hair  :)

I've got a leather cowboy hat that's great for keeping the rain from running down the back of your collar. Blows off in the wind though.  ;D

I want a waterproof too but if I got a camoflauge one I would get left in the Forest if I fall over as I would blend into the undergrowth!!!

Hi,

Just came across this thread, and as it's a horrible day today, decided to do some catching up and added Waterproofs to our site - will not appeal to everyone (they are not designer) but they will keep you dry.

Food Prep clothing coming soon as well.

And I promise not to tell anyone if you order the XXX Large sizes  ;D

Thanks

hi if its a that your old faithful has lost its waterproofing the you can wash/sray with 'nixwax' products.
much better than the price of a new coat... for hiking i use patagonia but too expensive for when i'm out with pigs/chickens

A hessian sack (clean) over your head and shoulders will keep the rain off and will dry out quickly and is free.(you couldn't really go to Tesco in it though!) Or could you? ;)

Tesco will take yer cash whether you're fresh out the shower or up to yer armpits in pig muck, dressed like a clown or in a hessian sack   :D :D

My ex husband is ex military, he gave me his gore-tex kit, trousers and jacket. they've survived my habit of straddling barbed wire fences and are totally waterproof, i've been known to romp with the pigs in the middle of winter in them! My son wore them for his duke of Edinburgh weekend hike and it poured the whole time, he was the only one to come back dry. Mine don't have pockets and the hood has space for a helmit which is not so good but i think the army surplus stuff is slightly different.

Living in the north of Scotland we do get a bit of rain up here too  ;) and I've gone through a few waterproofs, but the best by far is my Paramo Veles smock jacket. It's very light and non-rustley, and it comes with a little stuff sack if you need to use it. They are pricey, but worth it. The fabric is layered and actively moves water away from you. The outer layer doesn't shed water like normal goretex waterproofs but you don't get wet because of the action of the other layers.

We were going to save up to get some nice outdoor stuff from the next country fair BUT, after getting dog slobber, chicken poo and pockets full of alsorts including dead stuff and smelly dog treats, I think an army one would suit our needs. I don't get too cold but I certainly get wet, army camaflague will do, mind you, we bumped intot he police in the forest last night, an old couple were lost, now I bet they did not have bright jackets on like I wanted ;)  (off now as I am talking rubbish due to not long being awake and it is 9.15 OMG)

Just to say I am no fan of waxed jackets - have several. Smelly scruffy things. Yuk. Why don't I throw them out? Because I bought them before I knew better, then barely wore them and they cost a small fortune because I had to have the right 'label'.
