Title: phanton pregnancy ?
Post by: Pigglewiggle on September 21, 2010, 02:32:16 pm
Hi
Can pigs have phantom pregnancies ? Our pietrain just had 9 and we thought the GOS was too.
she looked pregnant, was the same size. she seems to have gotten smaller have looked all around. no sign of any dead piglets so was wondering if anyone else had seen this. she was also nesting the same time as the pietrain

I heard recently about a wee vietnamese pot bellied pig who had a phantom pregnancy - to the point where her owner could express milk easily from her teats - without ever having been near a boar ! So it does happen, how often I'm not sure ???

Yes one of our GOS sows got almost to the point of delivering and 5 weeks later 3 weeks after the last pos. del. date) is still at that point.  Today she looks as if she may be coming back into season.
