Title: vaccinating and other meds
Post by: Young Ed on September 17, 2014, 07:34:28 pm
do i need to vaccinate against anything annually or so? or do i just get ill and then treat? so the question is prevention in the first place or treating the problem when it has occurred?

(only a small flock of 2 ewes)
Cheers Ed

I'd suggest Hep p and maybe todo and enzo if you only have a couple?

definitely vaccinate against clostridials with either heptovac or ovivac, toxo and enzo are optional - maybe see how you go with your first lambing.  Chat with your vets - they will be able to advise what's rife in your area.  Vets are usually really good at giving free advice on the phone.  Don't worry about not knowing stuff, the vets would rather you ask than not.

Heptovac P  ... but find a local farmer with 2 spare doses .... the smallest bottle does 25 ewes and it doesn't keep more than a few hours.   You need to know if your ewes have had this vaccination before ... as they will need two doses a few weeks apart if not. Any other vaccination is unlikely unless the vet knows something local that you need to treat for.

Heptovac P if not dosed before then two doses 4_6weeks apart, subcutaneously (under the skin). Then annually 6weeks before lambing if you are going to lamb them or just top up if they are your pets. Anything else ,as mentioned, speak to your vets who know the problems in your area. Check the situationre blue tongue and schmallenburg as well.
