bigchick got it, nice colouring shame its a hen, oh well we will put our poorly coloured legbar cock to her then legbar cock to her chick again see if that improves the colouring, if not nothing lost and OH gets a couple of dinners

do you outcross your legbars with silkies as standard practice? Just curious as I've never had legbars, and its interesting to know :)

No I have a legbar bloodline that is loosing its colourings, it's head feather shape so I tried mixing with a black rock but that wasn't good so I then mixed that with a silkie and that was very bad so I tried the silkie to legbar we think its pretty cute we just need to push it back towards legbar a couple of times and see whats produced. To be honest we were just trialing things, actually I think that whole bloodline will go to market next month.

Interesting, looks the same as my Legbar x ??? but I don't have a silkie so the other half can't be that..

I think mine's mum may be either a Sussex or RIR hen but the broody wasn't the mother.. ah the joys of free range hens!

I don't know how to load a pic of my chick into this message or I'd do so, sorry, it's on my phone..

I said Legbar x  :(

The only cockerel I have is a Legbar and the chick was born here so it's a legbar cross something.  And it's mother is not the broody that sat the eggs but it is one of my hens, none of which are Legbars, so it's not a pure Legbar, no.

But you don't need to be nasty about it even if you think I am wrong and stupid and ignorant, or maybe you do but if so that's your problem not mine.

I have had several TAS members identify the cockerel without me saying anything because I didn't know when I got him, I didn't go looking for him or any cockerel and perhaps my taking him and the rest of them on to help out another TAS member has been a big mistake but I don't deserve mockery from anyone even if I'm as thick as you appear to think.

Lighten up, I was being light hearted
Hope this makes it up to you  :bouquet:

AndynJ - if your bloodline is losing it's colouring, Wouldn't you be better going back to a cross with one of the original breeds, ie Scots Dumpy (or Marans) for the barring, or Leghorn for the base colouring. And, of course, Araucana  for the blue egg.
Mind you - it's probably better to do as you've said and ditch your strain and get another that you like.
Incidentally, I don't know where you are but I've got a young legbar cockerel you can have for nothing.

Thanks I'm all the way down in Devon though.
I did think about getting a leghorn & or a araucana cocks but to be honest by the time I've messed about I may as well pick up a couple of extra girls & a cock and I'm set for next year then.
Legbars aren't too difficult to pick up

Britains ?

Yes - you know - they do very good 1:32 scale models. Surely you played with them as a child?
I didn't realise they did that model JD. It's a very good likeness, isn't it? Do you have a whole collection? :knit:

HesterF 7200 plus 200 premium no VAT which annoyed me a little as I'm Vat registered and how can a farmer with 90 acre and a caravan site not be VAT reg

Sorry if I over-reacted, it was a VERY hard week physically last week and I hit bottom a few times so the trigger is a little hypersensitive..

Anyway, I've posted photos of my chick so you can see why I thought what I thought, even if I'm wrong.
