Folks, George has emailed me and asked me to thank everyone for their very kind wishes. He and Kath are grateful for your concern. This is what he said - in his own words
"I interrogated my doctor today and it would appear that part of my right lung has developed an infection for which he has prescribed a course of antiiotics which is working very slowly. I am extremely short of breath and my mouth is extremely seriously dry. I cannot take solid food. Dinner through a straw is extremely unpleasant and I am taking as much fresh processed fruit juice as I can Through my Jack la Lane Juicer. I am sorry about the spelling I lave litterall no coordination It has taken ages to write this for yu"

Good to hear from you George, and speedy recovery.
John GM8KIQ

Wizard please get back to helth .you kept me going when i was ill .and yes i cut back and cut all the grass last week . and a quick wether up date .Unsettled at times with showers or longer spells of rain at times, especially in northern areas. Less rain in the south and south east. Temperatures close to the seasonal average, but warmer at times in the south east. The more settled weather may extend further north towards the end of the forecast period.
8/8 to 14/8
Dry and settled at first, and possibly warm in the south. Less settled conditions returning to the north, and temperatures generally falling back to the seasonal average.
15/8 to 21/8
Close to average temperatures for most of the period. Showers or longer spells of rain affecting northern regions. Drier and more settled at times in the south.
22/8 to 31/8
Mixed, but generally becoming more unsettled through the period, with showers or longer spells of rain affecting all parts of the country at times. Temperatures close to the seasonal average. Increasingly windy

Hi all. I phoned George earlier. He's not getting any better. I spoke to Kath as he couldn't talk. She said he's a little worse & he's on oxygen :(
The doctor will be seeing him again Monday. I am going to go see him as soon as I can. If I hear anything else I will let you all know.
-
Thanks Mick. Get well soon Wizard.
Ian
-
Thanks for that, tell him we are all thinking about him :)
-
Thanks, Mick. He's a grand old chap, we all miss his witty words and stories.
-
I love the simple words that John Clare uses to describe the things around us, his words remind me of the style Wizard uses so I looked out a simple poem, in my mind he talks of the love of nature, this is for Wizard
and of course his wife who may be in need of some support too.
A World For Love
Oh, the world is all too rude for thee, with much ado and care;
Oh, this world is but a rude world, and hurts a thing so fair;
Was there a nook in which the world had never been to sear,
That place would prove a paradise when thou and Love were near.
And there to pluck the blackberry, and there to reach the sloe,
How joyously and happily would Love thy partner go;
Then rest when weary on a bank, where not a grassy blade
Had eer been bent by Trouble's feet, and Love thy pillow made.
For Summer would be ever green, though sloes were in their prime,
And Winter smile his frowns to Spring, in beauty's happy clime;
And months would come, and months would go, and all in sunny mood,
And everything inspired by thee grow beautifully good.
And there to make a cot unknown to any care and pain,
And there to shut the door alone on singing wind and rain--
Far, far away from all the world, more rude than rain or wind,
Oh, who could wish a sweeter home, or better place to find?
Than thus to love and live with thee, thou beautiful delight!
Than thus to live and love with thee the summer day and night!
The Earth itself, where thou hadst rest, would surely smile to see
Herself grow Eden once again, possest of Love and thee
John Clare

Hi Russ, so sorry to hear that sad news thanks for posting. RIP Wiz.
JD
-
That is so sad. We will all miss Wizard - he always had something to say on every topic and shared his knowledge and experience generously. I only knew him for the last few months but I will remember him for a long time.
-
So sadly missed by all of us, regards to his family who must be missing far more :bouquet:
-
Oh, that is sad news, sympathies go to his family. :bouquet:
-
Sad news R.I.P. Wizard. :bouquet:
-
That is so upsetting, I felt I had got to know George as he emailed me regularly with little jokes, as well as his postings on here. I hope he is now in a lovely place where he has no pain or breathing problems.
May I also extend my condolences to Kath and their sons.
-
oh i feel so sad. like everyone else, i felt i got to know him through here. i wonder if it would be appropriate to send a card?
-
so sad. George will be greatly missed and I extend my sympathies to Kath, David and all of George's family. such a lovely man xx
-
Terrible news - my thoughts are with his family.
John
-
Bad news indeed ,he will be missed by a lot of people. I knew him from his River Cottage days before here, I must have talked to him for six months before he found out I was female. Nice to have known you George :farmer: Our thoughts are with Kath and family.
-
That is such sad news indeed. Thanks to his son for letting the news be heard. We develop what we feel are such friendships on a forum like this, and yet in the family circle they may not even know we exist, to tell us the news. I too hope he is now in a better place, and at least there he won't have to have his oxygen tank with him at all times.
Beth
-
oh i feel so sad. like everyone else, i felt i got to know him through here. i wonder if it would be appropriate to send a card?
Rosemary and Dan may have an address, I'll email her and ask. Or perhaps Jackie and Mick might be able to help.
-
How very sad, he will be greatly missed, a true character, this place wont be the same without him, I am so glad to have sent him to TAS, he made so many lovely friends and I know he really enjoyed posting here. RIP dear Georgee. Miss you already x

My God this has knocked me for 6...........I diddnt know Wizard for very long but I will really miss him :bouquet:
-
very sad when i was ill we talked everey day .the last time we spoke he was going to the steam fare .very specal person
-
Oh, I am so sad to hear this news. Although he was very ill himself, he still came on this forum with his lovely posts, and he never failed to send Bamford a daily post of what was happening, while he was in hospital, which was lovely!!
Wizard, will be really missed by everyone who "knew" him on here - I really loved his posts. Always smiled at him living in Grimsby and not liking fish!!
-
R.I.P George. I never knew you but will miss your writings on here. my condolences to your family. sheila x
-
Oh Dear...that's sad news. :(
-
Such sad news - at least George is now pain free. I'll miss him so much - he was such a character.
George and I (and others) discussed producing a little booklet of 'his' recipes - all the old fashioned stuff and selling it for charity - I'm sure he would want us to do this.
If you could all find your favourites and post them on a new thread, i'll collate them and produce a booklet - won't be too fancy, just simple & straightforward - just like George :)
-
Oh I can't believe it :( RIP George. You were a most genuine and helpful gent. My horses would still be going thirsty if it weren't for your invaluable knowledge! I hope you are busy picking brambles up there and tutting at my bad jam making skills. xxx :bouquet:

I only just found this message, I am in tears now - he was so keen for me to keep Olaf the Turtle on here to keep tabs on my weight, he always called me 'Annie, love'. Dear George, such a good friend and inspiration to us all. The rainbow bridge is where all our animal friends cross over, perhaps George had a special animal friend that is waiting for him there, and maybe we will all meet again. Watch out for us, Wizard.
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.... Author unknown

Such a shame, RIP George :'( :bouquet:

rest in peace George, anyone in touch with Kath? please let her know how much he meant to us all...
-
Such very, very sad news :( :( :( :(
George sent such wonderful DVD's about tractors through for my boys. He's such a very special man.
My love to Kath and all his family.
You are in my thoughts.
-
How terribly sad but at least he is no longer in pain and struggling for breath, he was such a kind man. When I asked on here about cutting up a pig he sent me a DVD showing how it should be done and also another of himself in the kitchen pickling walnut and making chutneys etc. I did have his address but can't find it now. Perhaps Rosemary would send a card on behalf of us all as she will have an address.
-
Very sad news, but at least he is no longer in pain or discomfort. He will live on in all the thoughts of everyone he touched with his posts.
Tish

david again mum wishes to thank u all for your kind words and will keep looking at the messages thank u all very much
-
David, you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. Your dad had such wonderful humour, and some fantastic recipes. We're going to collate them into a booklet and sell it to raise money for Macmillan Cancer - as requested by your dad.
To all TAS'ers, I would be grateful if you could contribute to this.....

Rosemary and Dan may have an address, I'll email her and ask. Or perhaps Jackie and Mick might be able to help.
Wizard was a fellow Ham Radio enthusiast, with a callsign G6YAT. Google it and you'll get his address from QRZ, the International call book database. Virtually all Hams publish their address details since it is the way to send confirmation postcards of contacts (QSL cards).
Or PM me for details.

I really am so very sad to hear Wizard's gone :'( The stories, memories and receipes always made me smile.
David, please pass my condolances to your mum and the rest of the family, you're in my thoughts.
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am in a thousand winds that blow,
I am the softly falling snow.
I am the gentle showers of rain,
I am the fields of ripening grain.
I am in the morning hush,
I am in the graceful rush
Of beautiful birds in circling flight,
I am the starshine of the night.
I am in the flowers that bloom,
I am in a quiet room.
I am in the birds that sing,
I am in each lovely thing.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there. I do not die.
I think this sums up a great man, bye George - I'll miss you
Karen xx
-
Karen that was really good, George would have liked it!
-
My friend asked me to read that at her husbands funeral. It had the whole congregation wiping their eyes.
-
Just seen this condolences to Kath and the family. Wiz you will be missed.
-
I've just picked up this thread again certain to hear that George was up and doing by now. What sad news. For us at any rate, George is absolutely fine wherever he is. Picking blackberries I dare say and making someone laugh!
-
Rest In Peace

Sorry to hear the sad news, I have not been a member long but always looked forward to reading Wizard's posts, his wisdom and experience were invaluable he will be missed greatly I know.

I haven't felt able to write something that would do George justice before now as I was too upset. :'(
I have tried to understand and to come to some sort of peace about George going. I know George was in pain and life was a struggle, every breath was a struggle, but like all friends we just accept that as is and don't really see things from another's point of view. It cannot have been easy for George but he still gave of himself and his time, which was soo precious to anyone who asked. Anyone who chatted to George knew that he liked them and in return we liked George.
Some people come into our lives for a relatively short time and they gather you to them and make you feel special for knowing that person.
George was like that. :farmer:
He made each of us feel special in some way and I for one am very grateful to have known such a vital character that was George, but I am so sad that I didn't know him for longer however I wouldn't wish him back into pain.
His wonderful stories of his childhood gladdened my heart every time I read a new one on here and I know I'm not the only one to have loved his stories.
It does feel fitting that as the summer fades away George leaves with it.
Wherever you are George know that Les and I will miss you and we are sure we will never meet another person who so touched our lives as you have done.
Our thoughts and prayers are sent to Kathy and the boys.
-
Jackie, that's beautiful. xx

Beautifully put, Jackie. Thanks. You put into words how many of us feel.
He was so witty and generous with his time and knowledge. He sent me some long emails with wonderful advice and I marvelled at how he was willing to go to so much time and trouble for a complete stranger particularly when he was so chronically unwell. What a kind spirited, lovely man. I wish I could have met him.
My sincerest condolences to his family.
Valx
-
I would like to extend my condolences to you all.
I have kept out of this thread because, being a newcomer, I felt it was probably personal.
I have only just caught up with the sad news because of the thread about the recipes, which I think is a wonderful idea.
I did not have the priveledge of getting to know your freind, but I am touched by your loss.
A long time ago I lost someone I knew only through Newsgroups, and the whole group did something personal in his memory, also for the Macmillan Charity. It is heartwarming to know that online communities still have a heart.
-
It was the least I could do for such a fine man :)
Im hoping to go to the funeral, and stand at the back so as not to intrude and later I will ask Kathy which was Georges favourite tree and then Ill plant one for him on my land so as long as that tree is there George will never be forgotton.
-
So sorry to read about Wizard, my thoughts are with George's family.
He'll be much missed on here
:&>
-
Wiz man....... Such sad sad news. I'm so gutted I never got to meet George. We had planned to meet up. I was busy & then he fell ill.
Even though I didn't meet him I will never forget the little chats we had. He was a genuine nice guy.
My thoughts are with you & your family Kath.
Such a sad sad loss
-
Such sad news.
I too didnt know him well, only through words on the forum here, on reading it truly sounds like he made a positive mark on alot of peoples lives he should be proud.
May god bless his soul and he rest in peace knowing he has shared so much.
Thoughts goes to all who will miss him.
-
That was a great post Jackie.
I didn't know him for long but I REALLY miss him............. :'(
Please let us know what his favourite tree was Jackie and I'll plant one too. Even if I move house, I'll plant one there too! His spirit will be with us forever. :farmer:
Don't believe in God but George will be at one with nature now more than ever. Thank you for everything Wizard!
Ian

Wizard truely was an inspiration to all newcomers to smallholding, he achieved so much in his life and will be greatly missed, offered me some great advice about starting out and that will never be forgotten! RIP Wizard :bouquet:
-
Have had a long break from the forum however can remember a lot of wizards early posts, certainly made me think with the funny replys and vast knowledge of many subjects RIP george...........a real character
-
As another newbie I only had a few conversations with George, but he was a real fount of knowledge about smallholding, and will be sadly missed.
Rest in peace George, you can be at one with nature now.
-
If David or kath is reading this. Do you feel that you can tell us the funeral details and would any of us be welcomed? Maybe you will just be having a family only private funeral. In any case our thoughts will be with you on the day. Sheila xx
-
Yes, if it were possible, it would be nice for someone off this forum to be there, to represent the rest of us
-
Im gonna ring Kath today to find out the details and if anyone other than the family would be welcome. If we are then hubby and I shall go.
-
I would like to extend my condolences to you all.

Ditto what SteveMo said. Found out through the recipe idea. I am so sorry to hear this sad news. The short time I have been on here I've enjoyed his banter too.
-
Send our love to the family Jackie. Great idea about the tree. If you can let me know what his favourite was I will plant one down here too.

And we could all put a preservation order on the tree so it cant get cut down in future even if we dont own the land anymore. ;)
-
For those who wish to send anything. Im sure you could send a card to the undertakers and it would get passed on.
Flowers may be sent to Kettle Funeral Directors, 135 Granville Street, Grimsby, DN32 9PB or if desired donations for The Urology Equipment Fund may be sent to the Diana Princess of Wales Hospital, Scartho Road, Grimsby, DN33 2BA.
-

-
Thank you from me too Jackie
-
I don't know Georges surname. can you tell me it so i can send things, Thanks
-
George Baker

How nice to plant a tree, I at first wonderd why Anne was going to put a tee Pee (spelt wrong I know) on a tree ??? ??? I always enjoyed Wizards posts and had a few tears after his last post, I think he knew.

Oh no! Since my phone format changed I miss loads of posts so just started to look about to see where George had gone. I had no idea he passed away. I'm actuually sitting on the trainwith tears rolling down my face. So sad...
-
I was the same and thought how strange to feel so sad about a charactor on the internet, just shows how much you can get to know people just from the words they use, I bet we all have a picture in our heads of him, I do!!!

Me too, that's why I sent him the Gandalf avatar - and he chose to use it!
-
When I met George in real life I ran to him and I slung my arms around his neck and kissed him like he was a long lost uncle cos we get to know people well on here.
God knows what he thought! But he did smile and accept the cuddle :)

Very sad news. Love and light to wizards family.
I'm a newbie ( well i don't contribute much, just read at the mo) so didn't get to know wizard but saying that I have read through alot of posts and what an amazing legacy to leave.....you don't get info like that in a book.
-
That's so true.. I found his posts to be so evocative of farming from years past. Full of tips on skills that are nearly gone now. l know he could be a devil mind and said just what he thought and many a clash happened on here but that was just so part of George and I'm sure he said lots of it to get the heated debates going :-)) I'm so sorry we'll never get to open another post from him and go ' oh no George can't believe you said that! ' a grand old gent may our mother earth welcome him back and keep him safe :'(

Gutted beyond words.................... This is the first time i have cried since my princess was born, and George was always posting a little hello message to Jess whenever we had any posts going.
We have lost a fountain of knowledge, no matter what i used to put on here i could guarantee that George woudl always have an answer, tip or recipe!!! (except fish of course)
I am especially gutted that i never took the drive to meet you George, why is we always think of doing something, or never actually 'Getting round' to meeting up with friends.
I havent been on here for a few days and only just picked up this post and in a way i wish i hadn't, i wish now i had just lived in my dream land that George was on here posting away happily.
I will truly miss you my new old friend and just hope that you are with the man upstairs laughing at this soppy 6 foot 36 year old man sobbing.
Rest in Peace you will be sorely missed, Our love and thoughts with you Kath and family from all at Castle WP (Graeme, Diana & Jess x)

Its Georges funeral tomorrow at 3.40pm is anyone going, apart from me?
If so could we try to meet up beforehand or Ill be going into the crem on my own and I would rather not.
Hubby never goes to funerals so he will be in the car park in his van waiting for me.
-
I can't be there, too far away, but I will be picking sloes at that time and pause awhile for a little prayer.
-
I'll certainly take a moment to remember George at that time - and Sylvia, I may even be picking sloes too!
-
I'll be remembering him at that time. Didn't know him well enough to attend even if I did live near, but he made an impression on me. :bouquet:

-
OK Ill be there for all of us then :)
-
Thats lovely Jacquie.
-
I'm too far away to come too, but it seems somewhat fitting that I'll be working on a tractor at the start of my adventure as George is finishing his.
I too will stop and take a few minutes.
-

Goodnight and God bless dear Georgee :(
-
I set my phone alarm to remind me of you at 3.40. No pain now, Wiz, bye  xx
-
Farewell George - I was strolling along the river Wye with my boys, picking blackberries and thinking of you. Rest in perfect peace :bouquet:
-
I went to the funeral. Was a small affair with family & friends. Was a nice service. Really wish I had been saying hello to George rather than goodbye. My heart goes out to Kath & family
-
Pleased to say that I remembered George at just the right time today. It's always good to just stop and think of someone else instead of yourself.
Right to the end The Wizard makes a difference. I suspect he will for a long time to come too.
Bye Wizard and hugs and best wishes to Kath and your family :bouquet:
Love Ian

God bless Wiz :farmer: :bouquet:

Isn't it amazing how much someone you've never even met can affect you. I've thought about George everyday since I read this thread. It also very striking reading the thread how many people George was emailing and PMing. He would email me regularly asking about my Landy and offering advice. I know he was in touch with many others and touched us in a way that has completely caught me by surprise. I will miss him very much and look forward to buying the recipe book.
-
I think our Wizard was helping that son of his - did you see the dunce's (wizard's) cap at the end of David's post? George will never die - he is alive and well on this forum. ;D
-
You're right Annie. We will all remember George fondly and his advice is his legacy on here.
-
Im so ashamed that unfortunately I didnt make it to Georges funeral cos as I was having a shower I got a bad migraine so spent the day in bed. :(
I had previously ordered a flower arrangement to be sent to the undertakers.

Don't be, Jackie - thoughts speak louder than words, I suspect the stress brought on your migraine.
-
Thank you :) Now Ill wait to see if Kath rings me about Georges favourite tree :)
-
god that is so sad. only started communicating with The Wiz on here recently, yet got so much respect instantly. R.I.P Wiz,
-
im so sorry that wiz's funeral happened while we were away at my brother in laws funeral in holland he was in a fishing boat and drowned.two in one day. :bouquet: just come back
-
scattybiker, I am so sorry for the loss of your brother in law.
-
thank you. it wasnt something we wanted to go there for....so i mucked in and took over the animal care i got to chase goats who escaped out of their field who cant understand english and ducks that insisted on lying in the road in front of cars, fed chickens with kitchen waste...that felt odd. i had to check it was allowed and kept getting funny looks and repies of they eat anything
-
It is amazing how differently the rules are interpreted in different EU countries. I think in France they just treat them as guide lines.
-
scattybiker, I bet you head is still full of cotton wool..it WIll Pass but memories stay and you will have a down moment at times :)
-
I am still missing wiz :farmer:
-
I think of the wiz everyday and sometimes when the photo comes up I forget he is no longer with us just for a moment. I guess he is still with us while ever we think of him?
-
i miss sending emails that have been sent to me and go to forward them on and then remember but i dont want to delete this address :(
-
Little things like the E Mail address can upset you more than other bigger things, I was able to get rid of a lot of my parents stuff but my dads cap was the very last to go....I also hate throwing childrens paintings out, but they are grown up now so I can!
-
I know :( George was a member of my its baaath time website, I think he was one of the first (despite telling me he preferred carbolic lol!!) I see his email adress come up everytime I log on to change the website around.
-
I wish he had made the recipe book that was discussed in recipes funnily enough. what a knowledge he had. I'm deeply touched by the loss. someone I never meet, suppose thats cyber space for you. Although there are lots of great knowledgeable people on here , George had great character, In the short time I blogged with him, I will never forget his presence.
-
We're compiling one in memory of him to raise money for Macmillan as he requested - please add your favourite Wizard recipes to the thread in the recipes section.
-
hi Sharondp, I was only here long enough to get a few simple recipes, bread n things, but I would love to buy a copy please, can you keep me informed? please

Craig, teh simple ones are the best - just tell Sharon which recipes they are and she can include them.
How's it going Sharon? Enough fro a book yet? And do you need any help?
-
I'm very disappointed at the response to be honest. I'm going through the recipes section myself to find Wizards recipes - just hoping I pick ones that people will like. If you could have a trawl through Annie and copy & paste some into the thread in the recipes section, that would be most appreciated - same goes for anyone else please!
-
oh no Sharon! I had assumed that you were being inundated so had not put anymore forward. I'll have a look through too. I think this time of year particularly brings up lots of George's recipes as he was so good with the autumn harvest type things - foraging berries etc!
-
I've only just found this thread as I've been away. I was just on looking for wizard's latest posts and it was when I couldn't find any that I had one of those feelings. Terrible news. Thoughts to his family and friends.
-
OK Sharon, I'll have a looksee.
-
Just posted one that made me chortle at the time - and still does. Come on guys - it's for a great cause - have a look at recipes and add them to the thread for Wizard's Wonderings. even if you joined after Gorge died, please have a look and see if something takes your fancy, then add it to that thread.

I have been going through the Wiz man's old posts & have been copying his recipes to wordpad & will post them all soon 8) 8) 8)
-
Thanks Mick! :)
-
George's wisdom has helped me with things I knew nothing about & I will never forget the man. Even though I never met him. We talked quite a lot before he got too ill & feel I have lost a good friend. I will do anything I can to help 8) 8) 8)
-
I know exactly what you mean and feel Mick, I'm very touched and saddened by the loss.
-
Sorry don't get notification on the iPhone any more so didn't see this. Can we include wine etc? Wiz posted a recipe for elderflower champagne for me that was lovely.
-
Wine is fine - anything that you have enjoyed and want to share :)
-
Is there any news on the wizard book front?
-
I'm working on it - it's going to have to be smaller than originally planned due to lots of other stuff going on for me at the moment, but it's coming together.
-
thanks for that. Hope it goes well.

If you need any help, just say, won't you? ???

It's just collating the stuff on the recipes thread so not really anything you can do at this stage, but I will shout if I need any more recipes - thanks!
