Title: At what age do you move a Boar on

Just thinking about moving our Boar on.

Question is at what age should you look to move a Boar on, and how would you move them on.

He is a Large Black and 3 years old.

Physical he is in good condition, he would be 220kg plus no problem with movement or servicing the sows.

Any advice welcome.

People generally move boars on when they become too big to serve gilts or they want to retain females from him in the herd.


It would be as WBF suggests worth contacting the Large Black society if he is registered but there is not much demand for senior boars. Cull price isn't good.


If he is doing your job and you have the work for him I would keep him.

I agree.  We generally sell ours at around two years old as their daughters come up to breeding age.  Mine are registered pedigree, so I sell as a proven working boar.
