Title: Had a break in - Photo Added
Post by: Roxy on September 14, 2012, 11:42:23 am
Arrived at the stables this morning.  Pulled up at the top of the track, and the security post, plus the chain that its attached to, was on the floor, and the gate was swinging open lower down the track.  OMG we both said.  I knew before driving down the track what they had taken :(
They had taken our two wheeled Hillam exercise cart, which was sheeted up, and chained up to the flat hay trailer.  We had removed the shafts to try and deter thieves, but they had bolt cropped the barn door lock and rummaged around until they found where the shafts were hidden.
Taken some horse tack too, two saddles, complete with special pads, girths, stirrups etc.  Worth quite a bit of money as they were Trekker treeless saddles. Also took some other stuff, not really had time to see exactlyt what, but the strimmer has gone, my riding hat, my waterproof coats (why? ) oh,  and even the little gas stove we brewed up on.  But how kind to leave us the kettle!!  And they missed a couple of bridles which were hung up.
These were taken from Disley, Cheshire,  but could be anywhere, will watch e bay, and our local horse sale.
The carriage is black, varnished wood seat, on rubber tyres .....had this years, and sentimental value as our old horse, now gone, used to pull it, and we have won lots of driving shows with it.
I am upset about the stuff going, but the worst thing was they had gone in the paddock, unchained the  gate where the Soay sheep are and gone down the field to the field shelter where two goats are (gated in at night). Finding nothing they wanted, they came out, but left the gate wide open.  And given the fact that the gate onto the drive was also left swinging open, the sheep could have gone onto the busy road.
I know these heartless scumbags do not care about animals welfare, but its a wooden gate in the field, and would have clicked shut had they pulled it to behind them.  Thankfully the soay sheep and goats were safe and in the field. The poor soays must have been terrified at seeing me with torches in their field, as they are scatty even with me, and would have run round.
The Shetlands were in the stables, right next to where the cart was. Pity they cannot talk.
The only slim chance we have is the farmer who has farm buildings across the lane, has cameras, and may have caught something  The police are going to have a look.
Obviously, this has really upset me, thinking people have been round our things.  But at least my animals are unharmed, so thats something positive for me

Sorry to hear about this, Roxy  :bouquet:  but thank goodness all the animals are ok  :relief:

It's almost more upsetting, the feeling of being so vulnerable, and not being able to be sure the stock are safe, than the loss of equipment, isn't it?

I do feel for you and I really hope the scumbags (good word sbom) are tracked down.  And you get your carriage back.

{{{{{hugs}}}}} and  :-* :-* :-*

So awful for you

It sounds like they came well prepared for the job. Glad they didn't touch the animals, though it's not much consolation for the stuff that has been taken, or the time and cost of repairing and replacing the damage.

Just had a call from another neighbour, she will check her cctv for late night activity on the lane.  Also she said that just below our field, where the lane narrows, the police have a camera to catch uninsured and untaxed drivers, who think sneaking over the back roads is safer, so hopefully they can check those.
Have spoken with the local tack auctions, who said its likely the thieves will lie low, and usually sell a few weeks later, but they have adescription of our stuff, if they try to enter it.

Oh Roxy
What an awful experience for you - just reading your post made me feel physically sick.
My OH thinks I'm paranoid, but I always worry if we're away from our animals for more than a couple of hours - even though we have CCTV, very watchful neighbours & our landlord's farm borders both of the roads that lead to here, his farm manager & staff are always out & about too - really on the ball, as they have equipment stored up here
I am so glad that your animals haven't come to any harm   & hope the police catches- up with the mindless barstewards  :fc:

Do you have any photos of the cart ? and also notify Beaston Auctions. Post notice on Ebay and preloved if you have photos.
Look behind the local 'traveller' campsite buildings.

:( Sorry to hear of your break-in.  We're up in Lancashire, but if you wanted to put together a flyer type thing, I don't mind putting them up for you at the stables my little boy rides at and at our local tack shop.  I agree about ebay and preloved and am happy to post on FaceBook for you and ask other to share if you like.

Thank you for the offers of posting on Facebook - I have put it on my Facebook page, asking people to pass it round their horsey friends.  The more people know, the better.
So many break ins at stables and yards.  A sheep farmer near us, is burgled around 3 times a year - quad, machinery, tools etc.  It looks like a prison now, with big iron bars above every gate to his fields and yard.
He has tried for planning to live there, and they turn it down each time.  I  do wonder why he carries on, as it must be heartbreaking finding stuff gone each time.

Worse than a fox getting your chickens >:( >:(  At least the fox has the excuse of ignorance. I hope you get your stuff back, enough publicity and the thieves may find your gear too hot to handle and may dump it somewhere :fc:

I am usually confident wondering round on my own in the dark .....but when this happens, it makes things different.  I am sure thieves are not going to wonder past me one night and help themselves, but every time I arrive in the morning, I will be looking to see if the gate is still locked, and worrying myself silly thinking they are there at night.
I wonder what these people would do if THEY were targetted by thieves?  I know they do not worry about the consequences of their actions, but why should they profit from my stuff.  I reckon they will get around £500 for what they took if not more.
I am not sure I want to be there anymore - whats the point if we cannot have our trailers etc. there, and have to find somewhere else to put them - and probably pay to store them too.  This has taken away the enjoyment of having the land and stables.

Still waiting for the Police to actually arrive to look at the crime scene.  Supposed to come within an hour, this morning.  Plenty of phone calls from them, including one from the crime scene fella, wanting to know was there any blood ......er ...no.  They went through gates and doors, not windows.
Title: Re: Had a break in - Photo Added
Post by: Roxy on September 14, 2012, 04:55:35 pm
Husband rang Police, re coming out.  They have downgraded our "crime" as there are no leads of enquiry.
Hubby not happy, at leaving us waiting all day, and then not bothering to say they were not coming.  They cannot look at camera on road, as too many vehicles going past.  What, late night, early morning, and got to be van or pick up?  Not going to be mega busy on a back road, surely?
Husband asked for security advice, and then just said put locks on ......yes, we had those, didn't we.  Anyway, they apologised for the delay, and may come out tomorrow .....or Sunday. Not much help from the Police then.

I dont think the response re the camera is a reasonable one given the time of night thing. I would be taking a complaint further on that one and insisting that either they look through the footage or you are permitted to do so.
Im really sorry by the way. This sort of thing ruins peoples quality of life and peace of mind.
NB also keep an eye on eBay and Dragon Driving website for your gear.
Was any of it marked?

The shame is, that's just so true - they'd have been there within 5 minutes if you'd said so.  Problem is that you'd probably have have had an overnight (at least) stay at her Majesty's pleasure  ::)

Come and live in the borders Roxy, nothing much ever gets pinched here, I couldn't live somewhere having to watch my back all the time, its like living in the middle of a city.  Not what living in the country should be about.

Roxy, how horrible.  Glad your animals are ok but know how you feel.  I had someone break in once and it was the thought of someone going through my home and things that was the worst.  I would certainly push for the CCTV on the road to be checked.

Hope you feel better soon and get your stuff back.

;D Ah, this theft is fine - thank you!!  I have lots of wonderful people all over the country now, who are spreading the word.  Even if I don't get my stuff back, I want these people caught .....they are probably robbing someone else tonight.  No one should have to go through this ....
Been to Holmfirth horse sale today.  None of my stuff in the auction, and OH had a good look round the car park and in the backs of vans, and trailers ....and we made sure everyone knew what we were looking for.
We have a horsey car boot/carriage sale coming up soon, near here, so will have to visit there, too.
Well, no sign of the Police, and they are meant to be ringing us this weekend. Oh, but they managed to catch my friend and her daughter on their way to their horses, and fine them £60 each for having no seat belt on ......much easier than looking for thieves.

I'm afraid the police are now just uniformed revenue commissioners, more useless than balls on the pope.
This probably was a pikey job, they are skum of this part of the world.
We have now setup a local vigilante network and when a crowd of dirty knackers setup camp locally we railroaded them under threat with a JCB & a few well chosen heavy's.
Police warned us not to be taking the law into our own hands.... they got told in no uncertain terms where to go.
Not tolerating this crap anymore, we're standing up and being counted.

I wondered when this was going to turn into Gypsy bashing. I hate the word pikey. My kids get called it by other kids. Its really not nice, I got called it too, as did my Mum. Not all gypsies are thieving barstewards  same as not all non-gypsies are. Good and bad in both. PLEASE stop turning every post about theft into an opportunity to attack a community  :'(   In fact, stuff it.

so that is plums pulled the plug     i know a good few gypsies as well    and worked with them and for them      it is just unfortunate that if there is a group of them  in the vicinity   or a white van is seen near the locus      the police issue a crime number and report as the work of the travelling comunity     yes it is the travelling community     the thieving locals  that want to be Gypsy's

in simple terms the police cannot be arsed in trying to solve trace or prevent this type of crime  and i am speaking from experience  :farmer:

First of all, we don't have any traveller camps anywhere near our area.  Through our carriage driving we have met a number of travellers, and to their credit, they have never given me any cause to think they are out to steal ....as to who stole our stuff, I really do not know.  I cannot blame anyone, and certainly not the travellers  any more than the next man.

Its always gutting having stuff nicked off you - when you have to leave stuff around out of necessity and believe in a certain level of trust.  It really brings a downer on your day and adds to the paranioa of future thefts.  In fact it brings you down for the rest of your life knowing that there are people out there that will take without working for it themselves.

Hi Roxy, Some on here will blame the travelling folk, this is an easy option for the police as they cant be arsed finding the culprit or culprits. My suspicion is, it is actually someone you know and will be of a surprise to you, someone you would never have thought of doing such a thing, but believe me it is going to get tougher out there and nothing will be safe, even if it is nailed down the f*****s will steal it.
We have had vandalism in the past and even the culprit's teeth were on our property did the police bother,  nae they did'nt and needless to say i was megga pissed of at their attitude, some are right lazy bastards.
