Hi all
I'm looking at buying a new pick-up as my little hatch back can't cope with the loads we need for animals and my OH is sometimes a bit reluctant to go 'shopping'
I read a few years ago that some places do 'agricultural insurance' where you can get a discount for owning a smallholding/farm.
Can anyone confirm this and/or recommend some insurance companies?
Always had normal insurance up to now. Sorry if this is in the wrong place!

Do you mean NFU ? (National Farmers Union ) They insure everything to do with agriculture and will have a branch close to you.

NFU has always provided very poor quotations for us- I wondered if anyone could recommend anyone else?

Try NFU again, they insure everything for us, House, Trailer, Vehicles, Business Insurance, we found them to be the cheapest and they understand agriculture, worth a try. Good luck

We have used NFU for everything for a while now, and while they are competitive for the normal car insurance, the van insurance (non commercial) is quite steep. Thinking of changing that this year. BUT if you have a claim/write-off like I had (car drowned in flood on the road) they are very quick with the money in the bank!

The NFU I found quite expensive. Like most insurance quotes its always best to shop around.
I would also try some of the independent brokers such as A plan to see if they can better any prices.

Try Diamond. A really good quote for my Landy even though I'd had two claims in two years with another firm who had, politely, asked me to search elsewhere. Diamond were cheaper than they were. 01803 362436 (and, yes, they do insure men as well)

Avoid Sheila's Wheels/Esure. If you need to change anything during the period of insurance they charge a £26 admin fee, and if you need an extra driver on the minimum is one week - not one or two days that you might require for an emergency.
I left them when I bought my new car so I cancelled the policy - they tried to claim the full year's premium - set a debt collector onto me. I calculated what i was due - told the DC and they agreed. to go back to SW about it - not heard anything else since.

NFU for us.
We have two vehicles insured with them and now the house (£100 cheaper than the company we were with before) contents as well. When we had the livestock trailer insured there was no problem that it was at a different address.
We dont live in the country any more. OH has a 4x4.
One other plus for the NFU is that they understand and specialise in agricultural/smallholding and related vehicles - your new pickup will be agricultural use - so their insurance is more relevant to that activity than other insurance companies. An important point to remember if you are towing livestock - in a trailer ;D

Diamond's number...0800 NOT 01803!!

Thanks SSS - NFU has been to the tune of thousands of pounds more for us in the past :o
I'll give A Plan a try

We were insured with NFU until this year their quote was over £500 for L200 for business usage with 3 drivers the youngest 23 years old
I did a search through my Topcashback Account and found Aviva would cost £325 plus we get £60.60 cashback after 3 months. It was a bit of a 'no brainer', we renewed with Aviva at almost half the cost
I suppose the moral is check every year, I know I will!!

I used to insure our tractor with the NFU but they weren't cheap. I didn't renew the policy due to price. After I told them I wasn't renewing they sent me several letters threatening to sue me for recovery of a "debt" as I hadn't paid my insurance premium! It took several visits to their local office to make them stop. Suffice to say we won't be using them again.

tried to insure with NFU this year but as the landy doesn't have windows in back and was registered as a Light Utility Vehicle...would only do commercial insurance... muppet on phone then said i could only carry my shotgun if i had fitted safe and metal box for ammo.... later discovered he was quoting for commercial carriage of firearms/bulk ammo!!!!

I need a 22 year old on the policy and was told they don't insure under 25's!

Least you got sorted ;D
I don't need discouraging from them, cant afford it!

Who wouldn't quote for a 22 year old NFU or Aviva?

NFU

We had him on as the third Driver on NFU policy, he has his own vehicle as well so he was an occasional driver on the NFU policy. We originally wanted to put him on it for a week, as my husband wasn't able to drive for a bit and I'm useless with the trailer. They worked out that it wasn't that much more just to add him to the policy for the rest of the year.
I wonder if they're using different underwriters this year as our quote was so expensive and they won't even quote to add a 22 year old to your policy.
