Title: kid off milk.....
Post by: Bumblebear on July 23, 2013, 12:21:23 pm
Hi guys I hope you can offer advice:
Bottle fed and 5.5 weeks old
Yawning a lot, trying to scratch his tummy with his leg, tail tucked under
Temp 39.5
Gets on his feet but is looking miserable

The vet said he may have overeaten and it could be a slight rumen imbalance which should sort itself out.  He's weeing properly (bladder stones discounted).  Vet sending me some pen.

Any tips or hints?

Have treated him/her for coccidiosis.............. at the right age.   This could account for the symptoms of pain being exhibited.
I routinely use Vecoxan (which you can buy at an Agricultural Supplier) at 4 weeks and then again at 6/7weeks.
Coccidiosis often doesn't show any symptoms & the next result is a dead kid to it is important to act fast.

If you are thinking cocci, can you get a feacel egg count?  I did one of my kid and found quite a few in it so treated.

If it is cocci s/he will have runny, yellowy poo, it could literally streaming out of him. If he is not having the runs it is more likely bloat....does his stomach feel round and hard? If yes I would be tempted to drench with a bit of bicarb/water, don't have a recipe here though saying how much for a kid this young...

Keep her/him on hay and water until better - is s/he on milk replacer or proper goatsmilk? If on lamlac or similar, always make up a bit more diluted than it says on the tin...

No scouring at all.  I gave him a teaspoon of bicarb in water and it seemed to have done the trick.  Thanks for your responses, after our horrible weekend with losing the pig, losing Eli would have been just too much.
