Title: Lesmahagow Show
Post by: Beewyched on May 26, 2012, 07:38:39 pm
Brilliant day ...
Took 4 of my Kune Kune & came back with 2x3rds, 3x2nds, 5x1sts, 2 Reserve Champion & a Champion  ;D ;D ;D
Thanks to the Committee of the Show & the hard working security -Bruce ( HHofHH ;)  ), to the Committee of the SPKA, especially Lillian, for all your hard work - it does not go un-noticed
But, for me, the biggest Star of the day was my hard working little helper Rebecca McKay, not only did she help show my KKs, but she had quite literally only met them 10 minites before taking them in the ring - the only child handler to be showing pigs against adult handlers - Best Junior Handler certainly well deserved  :trophy:  & many thanks for all your help today
  :pig:

It definitely was a winning day for the Kunekunes  ;) you're allowed to be proud mrs  :trophy:
My onion sausages (made with Kunekune pork) got placed higher than butcher made ones using saddleback pork - chalk up another win for the wee guys  ;D
Though there was no beating Lil with her pork & black pudding combo - super stuffer that she is  ;D   :D
I echo Lynne's sentiments Lil, you're a trooper  ;)   :-*   :-*   :-*

only two problems on the day  first and most important was i forgot the bloody mike to do a voice over and let the showgowers aware of what was happening   not to bad the entries representing 5 different breeds
and possible the most important aspect for the paying public was the restriction placed on us by environmental health banning us from handing out cooked samples of sausages entered into the sausage comp   how else is the public going to be  made aware of what pedigree pork tastes like  and for a brief time it looked like the sausage comp would be canceled but dogged determination payed off
looking forward to Angus show 8and 9 of June and more entries

Next time, talk to Carol Simpson in the East Kilbride environmental health department of South Lanarkshire council  ;)  I had spoken to her about handing out cooked samples of my sausages at the show (although I ended up not being organised enough  ::) ) but she had no problem with it providing I stuck to the guidelines for handling fresh/cooked meats. I've got the info that I can email to Lil if she want's it, just let me know.

Lillian does know the procedure  it was the committee that were dealing with it  and we find that working through a chain of command can prove problematic  with interpretation  :farmer:

are movement forms/rules & regulations any different for going to shows?

Post by: robert waddell on May 27, 2012, 08:55:57 pm
just the same although you are wise to get an isolation facility approved if you are intending showing
in Scotland for showing you have the choice for Scot eid or paper forms (all the shows in Scotland Lillian is the paper pusher and it is being monitored to see how it is going to pan out) :farmer:

Blimey you look young for your age Mandy. ;)

Thats my lovely ten year old niece!
TheStephens - when you go online to do an EAML theres an option for show, click that and then a drop down menu lists all the shows that month, you can do it upto 4wks ahead so juts follow it thro, we shall see how it works though i have had no reports from how things went re it at Newark for example.
All the best

the licences for newark worked ok for us going 1 licence for 1 boar and 1 licence for 2 gilts but the return licences printed we were going farm to farm and bringing 1 boar & 3 gilts back when i phoned they to ask why they said the system was not 100% set upand did not recognise the show to farm but would be sorted soon i will soon see the next show is in a few weeks.

a friend went to another showwith his commercials  x pigs farm to show  show to slaughter no can do the system was not set up to do this more a few choice words and they worked a temporary solution and were going to look into it apparently it was a oversight when implementing the new system.

Hi Alison
I managed to get my Isolation Unit re-registered within a fortnight - I'd nearly forgotton with Rach being so poorly - I can't remember how long it took the first time  :-\
It would be great if you could make the Angus show to make sure the wee KKs are represented, it's just a bit too far for us at the moment with waiting for the call from the hospital.

I will be there, me and Heidi the reversing pig and my laughing family!
This is my trial run into showing, looking forward to seeing all the pigs but interested to see what kind of Kune judges like better, rounder shorter pigs or taller, longer........

We must have photos Alison  ;)
Don't worry we all make absolute idiots out of ourselves - or should I say "our pigs make absolute idiots out of us"  ;D  Don't worry, Robert & Lillian will be there to assist (they can REALLY help you feel like an idiot  :D  )
As for "type" of KK - well, what can I say?  It will depend on who you get judging on the day, some don't believe that KKs are actually pigs  ::)  others may not have even read-up on the Breed Standards  ::)  For a gilt/sow it's her underline they'll be most concerned with - clean, even teats.
Make sure Heidi's had a bath the day before (then try keeping her clean  ;)  ) - I use baby bath (smells nice & kind on their skin), can't remember her colourway, but if she's got many dark bits, massage a little baby oil into her coat 10 minutes before your due in the ring (it'll help the 2 of you relax as well as giving her coat an extra shine).
Remember to take her water bowl & if she's a bit of a digger take some straw for her pen so she doesn't muck herself up before going into the ring.
Above all, enjoy yourself & show folks how lovely our breed is.
