Title: Whats on your smallholding wish list???
Post by: Shropshirelass on June 14, 2014, 09:27:56 am
So come on what would be on your smallholding wish lists that you'd like to purchase or be treated to in the next year. I've put mine below some of which might take a very long time to get but the 1s at the top are realistic:

small 4x4 (or at least a towbar & trailer set up on my car - the 4x4 wouldn't be used that often & more just for farm work so it shouldn't be too expensive to run)

Cider press

More poultry in small numbers

More poultry runs

Another dog - (This time a terrier type)

New waterproof trousers - If I don't find the old ones

Couple of horses (when I have the time & money)
Bit of Land with outbuildings attached
Small flock of sheep of my own

Now it's your turn xx

No.1 import some more buffalo heifers, in calf, for mozzarella production this year.
No.2 Build a bigger garden to grow more veg.
No.3 Finish the wildflower and herb patches, so I can buy in some bees.
No.4 Buy in a good ram from Ruthin or Builth, as I need to get rid of the old one.
No.5 Buy a new tractor, 4x4 and a few other farming pieces of machinery.
Good I think thats my list finished now. :relief:

a tractor, trailer, topper, harrow. failing that a quad version of the same.
finish the fencing, create a cattle race/crush etc.
a landy with a cattle trailer.

A smallholding in the middle of nowhere with a long unmade up road to access it. One where I could keep cats without worrying about them being run over.

I'd like a huge barn, segmented areas within for lambing and kidding.  An indoor milking area.

Apart from that I'm ok with what I have really  ;)

A couple of clones of myself and Mr Fleecewife, but with the bits which have broken down replaced.

If that's not possible, a couple of slaves who do as they're asked - that's not possible either.

In the main I'm happy with what we have already  :yippee: :yippee: :yippee: :garden: :hugsheep: :chook: :dog: :dog: :sunshine: me and him, and offspring well set up.

A very large cattle court style barn so I can save at least some of my ground and with any luck my body from further winter damage while providing optional dry standing for the stock.  And a fixed haybarn with a roof that doesn't leak, an extension roof that is back on after 4 years, some yorkshire boarding would be nice..

Tractor with a bale spike, dung graip and digger bucket at least

An income from writing or something I can do here anyway, to support all the above

Above all, my health and fitness back, but sadly that one is more than wishlist, it's miracle list ::)

More likely I should wish for an alternative lifestyle without the land/stock, but with a regular income not dependent on physical capacity or mental endurance ::)  Just finding it hard to change the mindset :(

Ducks do a pretty good job on slug extinction! ... no probs in my veg garden this year..

Wish list ....

1) a flat area to build a barn!
2) the barn
3) a tractor with 'kit'
4) the polytunnel to be erected and full of veg .. rather than being a kit in the shed!
5) the cows to be pregnant
6) no more new springs to appear ... just when you think you have the wet bits mapped!
7) grass to out complete rushes!!

.... and the  :sunshine: to continue ...

just acquired a 7th one: (likely to double up as a rant)

7 NO NEIGHBOURS   !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My neighbours are lovely as a rule and not sure this isn't partly me descending into total social isolationism and bad tempered old sod mode- but nonetheless
Took this week off work to try to tackle the fairly major ongoing restoration of our garden involving much wall building and slab laying. Brother in law and family descends for the first 3 days without warning- spends 3 days giving me much needed instruction despite the fact that the last time he indulged in anything approaching physical work the old king was probably still on the throne. despite his considerable verbal expertise seemed congenitally incapable of keeping his pesky kids off my new laid slabs so gave it up as a bad job till he'd gone.

At last yesterday morning a free run at it- oh no- neighbours drains have collapsed under our lane- spent all of the morning bailing buckets and buckets of guess what, dismantled our fence and rebuilt it so he could get digger in and eventually got to patio building at about lunchtime. spent all afternoon in baking sun mixing cement and hauling concrete slabs- kept my dogs tied up out the way to avoid any accidents. just finished when another neighbour ( who shares the drain in question but despite having the day off work took his kids to the beach while I spent hours covered in his families' sh*t) appears with his hoofing great hound- all over the slabs just laid (dog and neighbour, despite their being plastic sheeting all over it and barricades all round it). By this morning several slabs have been knocked askew and have got to take them up and do it again.
Not finished yet. needed to move a couple of sheep with lambs down to a fresh bit of ground at the end of our lane- normally our sheep are easy to move around but this morning with the lambs being a bit all over the place they were playing silly buggers. eventually got them going the right way while my other neighbour watched me get hot and sweaty- and then, just as they got near him, within 10 feet., he starts up his bloody drill- cue swift about turn and all galloped headlong back past me and up the lane to where they'd just come from and back into the field. oh I can swear !!!!!- bucket still where I threw it and sheep not where I wanted them- BLOODY PEOPLE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 that's slightly better !

My wishlist would include a large and already prepared for planting large fruit and vegetable area that would remain free of slugs and snails forever. Maybe then some bees that would never chase or sting me and a wildlife pond. Failing that perhaps an extra weekend mid-week?
