Anyone know how to get a hold of Mangalitza sperm for AI??
-
I have a friend which breeds them, so he could either sell you a boar or know of someone who sells mangalitza semen? Your best bet would be to go to the BPA and they will probably know. Here is someone I have found https://www.mangalitsaestates.com/genetics (https://www.mangalitsaestates.com/genetics)
Hope it helps and all the best

Deerpark in Ireland holds the majority of pig semen for BPA recognised breeds. I have never heard that they have Mangalitza semen and would somehow doubt it is a priority against some of our native breeds and they don't appear on their list.

Thanks Waterbuffalofarmer! Any contact for mangalitsa s would be good
Harmony, I think you are right in that that company do not carry Mangalutsa semen - although it is defo a priority of mine!!!
Thanks

As I understand it semen for AI needs to be kept at 17 degrees C. This is why we keep a boar - he does it for himself. .

That's interesting because the semen is sent via Royal Mail and how can they ensure the temperature? Obviously it works for some.

Deerpark send the semen in an insulated box by 24 hour delivery ;)

It's illegal to sell sperm from pigs unless you are registered.
Deerpark don't have Mangalitzas.
I know of no-one in UK registered for Mangaitzas.

This guy is a friend of mine and he keeps mangalitza's, registered. He could supply you with a boar, probably not semen though. http://www.preloved.co.uk/adverts/show/106006474/pedigree-mangalitza-mangalitsa-pigs-weaners-pork-sow-boar.html?link=%2Fadverts%2Flist%3Fkeyword%3Dmangalitza%2Bpigs (http://www.preloved.co.uk/adverts/show/106006474/pedigree-mangalitza-mangalitsa-pigs-weaners-pork-sow-boar.html?link=%2Fadverts%2Flist%3Fkeyword%3Dmangalitza%2Bpigs)
He may know of someone who does it though, not sure. I think your best bet would be to import semen though which would go to your local AI technician unless of course you plan to store it yourself in the which case you will need the correct equipment, a flask and a case full of the correct cold stuff

I know. I have used them but if MF is correct then how do they know the box remains at 17 degrees?

Not sure about the journey but I've been to a large pig farm that uses AI sometimes and once received it's stored in a temperature controlled insulated box until used.

So to conclude: no one is aware of how to obtain Mangalitsa semen for AI purposes??

Correct but as suggested early on try the BPA. You could consider a cross.
-
Cool, will do that
I don't believe crossing the breed is an option
They are a specialist pig with very different qualities, crossing just dilutes these qualities that I want!

That is fair enough but I think you will be looking at natural service.
