I managed to get some cider vinegar at last. How much do I give my chooks and dooks and how often?

I buy it in 5 litre containers and I just put a slosh into about 5 litres of water

@20 mls per litre of water.
I sometimes also put garlic granules ( horsey type ) in there to add a bit more medicinal property.

Nope, giving them away just now - but I bought a new bread bin yesterday so will try some out in the old metal roll top one tomorrow.

is it supermaket stuff or has it come from a cider pressing place..... as you may know but others may not is that supermaket stuff is no good...... i have a cider pessing place near me and can get it by the bucket.

What's the difference? yes it's from the supermarket but learned folk on here said that it was OK..................

We have been giving our hens the bottles bought in shops for seven years, and its only done them good Annie - don't worry.
I am sure freshly brewed stuff is good too - but its a long way to Taunton, or should that be Tipperary ;D ;D ;D

yes it is ok but useless for your use..... super maket stuff has been filtered etc for human consumption and all the benifical bits for birds digestion etc has been filtered out so its useless for the purposes of poultry tonic, this has also been the subject of an article in PP magazine which confirms my info to you, supermarket stuff wont do any harm but it wont do any good either, someone said theyve used supermarket stuff for years and their birds have thieved on it , how can you tell that, they would have thrieved without it. its got to be straight from a brewer or from a poultry farm shop. you are better off putting it on your chips and useing garlic in their drinking water. these days theres a lot of cider presses all over the country it isnt just somerset., my local one is in norfolk. If your supermaket stuff has a sediment at the bottom of the bottle (bacteria etc) and states unfiltered then i might be ok

Ok, thanks for explanation, Harry. No it doesn't say unfiltered and no sediment, but it tastes lovely so I'll save it for myself. I have citricidal and fresh homegrown garlic so I can crush some bulbs and dilute then put some of that in their water.

We occasionally put cider vinegar into the goats water buckets, but it's normally to disguise the taste of water they're not used to. They can be fussy at shows if the water tastes funny, and the cider vinegar masks that. Although to be fair so does treacle, and they like that better!

I CERTAINLY wouldn't waste treacle on my chooks ::) ;)

Lol! I don't like treacle that much- except in some baking. Treacle scones.....

My Christmas Cake has two LARGE tablespoons in it. yum yum

i think you can just crush a garlic and chuck it whole in the drinker, not sure what it does but it think it discourages biteing pests on legs etc.... just a thought could spread treacle on the legs instead of vasoline as vasoline smoothers / kills biting pests ( scally leg)....
