Title: My introduction
Post by: Carasine on March 15, 2011, 09:42:32 am
Since I started asking questions I thought I'd better introduce myself.
I live in Scotland (north of Dundee) and can't really claim to be a smallholder, accidental or otherwise. I would love to have a smallholding, but land prices always seem to creep out of my reach  :(

I do however have a half acre garden and live in a very rural area. I grow fruit, veg and herbs and have a few chickens.

Not sure what else to say but Hello

Hello and welcome!!

I think with your half acre plot, you can call yourself a smallholder.....we are all smallholders, just some smaller than others!!!

Hi we had to move to Brittany to achieve our smallholding, where we lived in UK  1/2 an acre wasnt a garden it was either a prospective housing development or at the very least an estate (which makes you landed gentry).   ;D

No different to me really, I have a slightly bigger garden than you, chickens like you, grow things like you, also have ducks and dogs, and am Treasurer of Central Scoland Smallholders - you're not far from Rosemary so why not join us and come to meetings with her!  She's our events organiser - the list will be on our website soon www.smallholders.info (http://www.smallholders.info) and the first three months are on our Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001246158129&ref=ts (http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001246158129&ref=ts)
Welcome to TAS forum.

Thanks for the welcomes  :D

Henswise I've just got a couple of hybrids and Rhode Islands. Hoping to get a few more, possibly Australorps if I can find a supplier.

I'm hoping to plant a few fruit trees in the next year or so and possibly a nut or two.
We are up in the glens so frost can be an issue so I'm still experimenting with the best types of veg to grow. So far brassicas seem to be a disaster but the courgettes are great.

Thanks for pointing out the central Scotland smallholders group. I'll keep any eye on activities.

Not sure about the landed gentry. I'd really like somewhere with 5-20acres that I could try to be fairly self-sufficient on, but I'm happy where I am untill I get an unexpected windfall from somewhere!

Welcome from over the bridge in fife

I just have hens, and a few tubs of veggies, and very occasionally a couple of orphan lambs, i still like to think I'm a smallholder, but reality would most likely say I'm not  :)
